USF Baseball: Four-homer game powers USF past Wichita State, 7-1

Carmine Lane went deep twice and drove in a career-high four RBI on Saturday.

WICHITA, Kan. (May 15, 2021) – The USF Bulls (22-23, 12-11 AAC) launched a season-high four home runs on Saturday at Wichita State (26-20, 14-12 AAC) to breeze past the Shockers, 7-1, behind a quality start on the mound from Jack Jasiak (Spring Hill).

The Bulls’ offense matched a season high with seven extra-base hits in the win. Carmine Lane (Lake Placid) recorded the first two home run game of his career and set a new high in RBI (4). Roberto Peña (Caracas, Venezuela) and Jake Sullivan (Tampa) also went deep for USF.

Sullivan sparked the fireworks with a leadoff homer in the second inning – his first of the season. Lane followed suit in the third by leading off the frame with a round-tripper. The redshirt freshman connected on his second longball, a two-run shot, in the fourth inning. Four of Lane’s seven home runs this season have come in the past eight games.

Peña belted his team-leading 10th homer in the seventh inning, and Lane drew a bases-loaded walk later in the frame for good measure as the USF lead swelled to 7-0.

The Shockers snuffed out Jasiak’s shutout bid in the bottom of the seventh, before Logan Lyle (Bartow) entered in relief to blank the home team for the remainder of the ballgame.

Jasiak (4-7) allowed one run on just three hits and struck out eight over 6.2 IP. The redshirt freshman yielded just one WSU hit over the first six innings en route to his ninth quality start of the season.

Notable

  • Saturday marked the second four-hit game of the season for Lane who leads the team in multi-hit games (17) and multi-RBI games (9).
  • Peña is hitting .636 (7-for-11) with two doubles and two homers in the series.
  • Jarrett Eaton (Mobile, Ala.) went 2-for-4 at the plate and has hit safely in all three games in the series at WSU.
  • Jasiak’s eight strikeouts were his most since March 5th (10) and the three hits allowed were his fewest since February 26th (2).
