USF Baseball completes sweep of Stony Brook with 17-run outburst

Carmine Lane went 3-for-5 with a homer and three RBI in the Bulls’ 17-2 win Sunday afternoon.

TAMPA (February 27, 2022) – The University of South Florida (4-2) put on an offensive clinic Sunday afternoon in a 17-2 romp to complete a three-game sweep of Stony Brook (1-5) at USF Baseball Stadium.

South Florida’s 17 runs scored are the most since a 17-4 victory over UCF on April 1, 2008.

Drew Brutcher (Lakeland), Daniel Cantu (Jacksonville) and Carmine Lane (Lake Placid) each homered on Sunday and combined for nine RBI. Brutcher doubled, homered and tallied a career-high five RBI – the most by a Bull since Coco Montes on April 14, 2018.

Every USF batter to enter the game – 12 in total – recorded at least one hit. Bobby Boser (Wesley Chapel) registered his first collegiate hit – a double – and Sonny Rao also tallied his first hit – a two-run single in the eighth inning.

On the mound, Jack Cebert (Tampa) picked up his first collegiate win. The freshman right-hander did not allow a base runner over 1.1 IP in relief of Dylan Vega (Pembroke Pines). Making his first start, and second appearance as a Bull, Vega allowed just one run on four hits and struck out three over 4.2 IP.

Tanner Mink (Palm Harbor) and Nolan Hudi (Safety Harbor) each made scoreless relief appearances to close out the ballgame.

Lane’s home run broke the scoring seal in the first inning and officially opened the flood gates in the series finale. Keanu Jacobs-Guishard (Philipsburg, St. Maarten) added an RBI-double in the frame as the Bulls raced out to a 4-0 lead.

Brutcher’s three-run opposite field homer in the sixth inning staked USF to a 9-1 advantage. Cantu’s solo shot on the first pitch of the seventh inning sparked another a four-run frame for the Bulls and the home team tacked on four more runs in their final at-bats in the eighth.

Notable

  • Jacobs-Guishard went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and one RBI.
  • Ben Rozenblum (Coral Springs) extended his hitting streak to six games.
  • The Bulls produced 17 hits on the day, allowed just five, and did not commit and error on defense.
  • USF batted .359 with 13 extra-base hits in the three-game series and posted a 1.67 team ERA.
