USF Baseball: Bulls blanked by Sycamores

Jack Cebert did not allow an earned run and struck out seven over 5.0 IP in the loss.

TAMPA (February 19, 2024) – Postponed twice by weather and condensed from three games to just two, the University of South Florida baseball team was finally able to wrap up opening weekend on Monday afternoon at USF Baseball Stadium. The Bulls (0-2) dropped the finale to the Indiana State Sycamores (3-0) by a score of 5-0.

Indiana State was the only team to visit and leave Tampa undefeated with wins over Louisville, UConn and USF. The Sycamores did so on the back of stellar pitching, which also carried them to a 2023 Super Regional (3.84 ERA). Indiana State posted a 1.67 ERA over three games in Tampa to begin the 2024 campaign.

South Florida also shined on the mound in its two ballgames, recording a 2.00 ERA, an area that needed improvement from last season.

Jack Cebert (Tampa) was the tough-luck loser on the mound for the Bulls on Monday against the Sycamores. The junior right-hander scattered four hits and allowed two runs (zero earned) with seven strikeouts.

A two-out error by USF opened the door for a pair of unearned runs for the Sycamores in the third inning. In the sixth inning, freshman right-hander Adan Longoria (Plant City) impressed with a pair of strikeouts in relief, but also allowed a solo homer that narrowly evaded the glove of Drew Brutcher in right field.

The Sycamores went on to add one more tally in the seventh inning.

Chandler Dorsey (Lakeland) and Peyton Jula (Sarasota) each tossed scoreless innings of relief to close out the game on the mound for USF.

Notable

  • Cebert and Friday night starter Hunter Mink (Palm Harbor) combined to allow one earned run over 10.0 IP and 14 strikeouts in their outings.
  • Dorsey, who made appearances in both games, has tossed three scoreless frames with three strikeouts out of the bullpen.
