TAMPA, JUNE 9, 2021 – A record 288 University of South Florida student-athletes earned Athletics Honor Roll recognition after the recently completed spring term as USF extended its record streak of an annual department GPA over 3.0 to 13 consecutive semesters and six academic years.

Following the compilation of spring grades, USF saw 15 of 17 programs earn a 3.0 team GPA in the spring term and 14 programs log an annual team GPA better than a 3.0. The Bulls’ annual overall department GPA for the 2020-21 academic year came in at 3.23, just shy of the department record set last year (3.28) and above a 3.2 for the second straight year.

Head coach Jeff Scott’s football program contributed to the record Honor Roll recipients with a program record 57 players recognized in the spring term to lead all Bulls’ teams.

The Athletic department posted a spring term GPA of 3.24 across nearly 500 student-athletes. The Bulls set an overall term GPA record of 3.41 in the previous 2020 spring term. USF has posted an annual overall GPA of 3.0 or better in seven of the last 10 years, including six straight years, and posted a 2.94 or higher in the three years short of a 3.0.

“Our USF student-athletes continue to make us very proud with their commitment and achievement in the classroom,” Vice President of Athletics Michael Kelly said. “Our talented academics staff continues to provide support at a nation-leading level and our coaches, staff and university continue to make academic achievement a top priority and work to ensure our student-athletes achieve their goals.”

Over 70 percent of USF student-athletes earned a 3.0 GPA or higher in the 2021 spring term and 65 percent own a cumulative GPA over a 3.0. Fifty-one Bulls posted a 4.0 term GPA and 186 had a 3.5 or better, meanwhile 14 maintained a cumulative 4.0 GPA and 163 had a 3.5 cumulative GPA or better.

USF’s men’s programs averaged a 3.05 term and cumulative GPA, while the women’s programs posted a 3.47 term GPA and 3.45 cumulative. Eight of 17 programs improved their annual team GPA from the previous academic year.

The American Athletic Conference Champion women’s soccer team, led by head coach Denise Schilte-Brown, earned the President’s Cup, posting the highest annual team GPA with a 3.61, and also the Provost’s Cup, with the most improved annual team GPA going from a 3.49 in 2019-20 to a 3.61 in 2020-21.

“We are so proud of our student-athletes and how they continue to respond to changes and challenges presented throughout the recent pandemic and continued to excel,” Associate Director of Athletics for Academics Tim Anderson said. “Our academic support team here at USF is second to none and I am very proud of the effort, thought and commitment they have shown in helping propel the achievement of Bulls student-athletes.”

USF saw 88 student-athletes earn their degree in the fall or spring of 2020-21, with more set to graduate this summer.

A record 13 programs logged a perfect single-year Academic Progress Rate (APR) score and the department posted an overall record 995 single-year score when the NCAA released its most recent data.

USF also earned an 84 percent Graduation Success Rate, eclipsing 82 percent for the seventh straight year, and had four teams earn a perfect 100 percent when the NCAA released that most recent data last November.
