USF Athletics: Bulls Student-Athletes Honored at Stampede of Champions

Student-Athlete run event hands out 16 awards recognizing the top performers and performances of the last year.

TAMPA, APRIL 28, 2022 – University of South Florida student-athletes got dressed to impress, walked the red carpet and celebrated the outstanding performers and performances of the last year at the 2022 Stampede of Champions held at the Yuengling Center on Wednesday night.
 
Th Hollywood-style awards ceremony was hosted by student-athletes Lucy Roberts (women’s soccer), Madisyn Lyons (volleyball) and Marcus Murphy (men’s soccer) and recognized nominees and award winners from USF Athletics in 16 categories.

 
Stampede Awards – bronze statues of bulls –  were presented to winners that included the Team of the Year (baseball, which won an AAC title and made the program’s first-ever NCAA Super Regional appearance), Female Athlete of the Year (Georgina Corrick, softball), Male athlete of the Year (Carmine Lane, baseball), Coaching Staff of the Year (baseball), Female Newcomer of the Year (Sierra Berry, women’s tennis) and Male Newcomer of the Year (Drew Brutcher, baseball).
 
Softball standout Georgina Corrick took home the Best Performance Award for her perfect game vs. Florida A&M on March 6, the fourth in program history. The All-American pitcher collected three awards on the night, including the prestigious Lee Roy Selmon Award

The baseball team not only won Team of the Year but also Best Team Performance and Coaching Staff of the Year for their efforts in winning the 2021 American Athletic Conference Tournament and the NCAA Gainesville Regional over Florida, Miami and South Alabama to reach the NCAA Super Regional in Austin, Texas.
 
Head coach Jolene Shepardson’s volleyball program was presented with the Team Community Award for the Bulls’ extraordinary efforts in giving back to the Bay area.  Football senior linebacker Antonio Grier, who serves as lead mentor to youth at the Hillsborough County Detention Center and led several community initiatives as the president of his fraternity, received the Individual Community Award.

USF Athletics currently sponsors 19 varsity men’s and women’s teams that compete in 11 different sports, 18 at the NCAA Division I level in the American Athletic Conference, which will expand to 21 teams with the recently announced additions of women’s lacrosse (2023-24) and women’s beach volleyball (2024-25). The Bulls’ athletic program began in 1965 and completed its 55th season in 2020-21. Nearly 450 student-athletes train and compete in the athletic district located on the east end of the campus in Tampa, Fla. The Bulls have claimed 26 American Athletic Conference team titles since joining the conference in 2013, including seven trophies in the 2021 calendar year, and own 135 conference titles in department history. The Bulls have posted a combined annual grade-point average over 3.0 for seven straight years and have posted a program-record 14 straight semesters with a combined GPA over 3.0 as of fall of 2021. USF has had nearly 500 student-athletes earn their degree since 2016-17.
