UF WTN: Florida Posts Five Victories on Day One of UNF Invitational

Three singles victories and a pair of doubles wins highlighted a strong opening day in Jacksonville.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Florida women’s tennis opened the North Florida Invitational with a strong showing, earning five victories on day one of competition.

It was a strong start to the weekend for the Gators, as the doubles teams of Alicia Dudeney/Emma Shelton and Sara Dahlstrom/Bente Spee each opened with a victory. Dudeney and Shelton earned a hard-fought victory over Charlotte’s Sawhney/Schech, 7-5, while Dahlstrom and Spee took care of business with a 6-3 win over Borland/Clark of Tulane.

Florida also tallied a trio of victories in singles competition to bring their win total to five for the day. Freshman Dudeney turned in the first victory, sweeping Yelamanchili of Tulane, 7-5, 6-4.

No. 84 Emma Shelton was victorious later in the afternoon, battling to a three-set victory over Mayorova of Clemson (6-3, 3-6, 6-4). In her first competition of the fall season, Dahlstrom was dominant over Tulane’s Zhu, 6-2, 6-1, to move to 1-0 in singles competition in the fall season.

The Gators return to action on Saturday for day two action at the North Florida Invitational.

NOTEABLES
– The doubles victory with Spee marked Dahlstrom’s first victory and appearance of the fall season. Dahlstrom also sits at 1-0 in singles play.
– Dudeney (9-5), Shelton (4-3) and Spee (4-6) all improved their doubles records.
– In singles play, Dudeney improved to 9-2 while Shelton is now 7-2.
– Dahlstrom is the lone returner from a year ago competing at North Florida for the Gators.
