UF WTN: Florida Earns Six Spots in ITA’s End of Year Rankings

The doubles team of Carly Briggs and Marlee Zein earned the top-ranking for the Gators at 24th.

TEMPE, Arizona –Florida women’s tennis ended an impressive first half of the season with 50 singles victories, 44 doubles wins and victories in 10 ranked-matches, helping the Gators earn six spots in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s end of the year rankings.

The doubles tandem of Carly Briggs and Marlee Zein hold the highest ranking, finishing the fall ranked 24th after being unranked as a pair in the preseason rankings. Together, the duo earned the consolation doubles title at the ITA National Fall Championships, claiming four-straight wins, including a ranked-victory. The pair also finished as the runners-up in doubles competition at the ITA Southeast Regional, earning three victories in Lake Nona.

Briggs also finds herself in the doubles’ rankings alongside freshman Alicia Dudeney at No. 42. While partnered together, Briggs and Dudeney earned a ranked-win and finished as the runners-up in doubles competition at the Kitty Harrison Invitational during their first competition of the season.

Just a freshman, Dudeney also appears in the doubles’ rankings as a piece of two more squads, including a No. 46 ranking with Bente Spee. The two freshmen picked-up two wins at the Georgia Invitational during the late fall. Sydney Berlin and Dudeney rounded-out the Gators in doubles rankings, finding themselves 51st after qualifying for the semi-final round at the ITA Southeast Regional and collecting three-consecutive victories.

In singles competition, Zein finds herself the highest-rated Gator at 34th. The senior composed a 5-5 singles record during the fall, but ended with three ranked-victories over No. 32 Cameron Morra (North Carolina), No. 52 Anna Campana (Wake Forest) and No. 67 Kylie Collins (Texas). Zein’s ranking marks a 30-spot improvement from her preseason ranking of 64th.

Emma Shelton also remained in the final singles’ rankings of the fall, coming in at No. 87 after holding a preseason spot of 84th. Shelton put together a strong fall campaign that saw her record eight solo wins, including a ranked-victory over No. 65 Ava Hrastar (Georgia Tech) en route to the quarterfinal round at the ITA Southeast Regional.

Florida women’s tennis is set to begin the second half of their season when they travel to Las Vegas on Jan. 13, 2022 for the Freeman Memorial.
