UF WBK: Gators Search for Second Season Win Over Bulldogs

The Gators head to Athens, Georgia, on Sunday to look for their second win over the Bulldogs this season. Florida defeated Georgia in early January at the start of SEC play and will face them once more before closing out conference play next week.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Florida is back on the road for a Sunday afternoon contest against the Georgia Bulldogs. The Gators will be traveling to Athens after defeating the Mizzou Tigers Thursday night 86-70 in the O’Dome.

The contest between the Gators and the Bulldogs will mark both team’s fourteenth conference games of the season. After Sunday’s contest in Athens both Florida and Georgia will only have two SEC games remaining before they head to Greenville, South Carolina for the post-season tournament.

THE SERIES:
The current all-time series between Florida and Georgia is in favor of the Bulldogs at 52-18. Florida won the last matchup against Georgia 78-69. to put them on a one-game win streak.

HISTORY:
Florida and Georgia have met a recorded 70 times in their respective school histories. The most recent matchup was January of 2024 in Gainesville with the Gators defeating the Bulldogs 78-69. Georgia shot 41.7 from the field and 18.2 percent from the three compared to the Gators’ 43.3 field goal percentage and 34.8 percent from the three. Overall, Leilani Correa led the way with 30 points for the Gators, followed by a 21-point outing from Aliyah Matharu. Both programs have grown and developed since their initial meeting earlier this season, making it a highly anticipated matchup in Athens.

FLORIDA’S LAST GAME:
Florida’s last time out was a home win against Mizzou. The Gators defeated the Tigers 86-70 with three players in double-figures for scoring. The win marked Florida’s eleventh 80+ point win and fifth SEC win of this season. The Gators were led by Aliyah Matharu with a 28-point outing, marking her career high. Matharu went 11-of-21 from the field, 2-3 from the charity stripe, and recorded one block for the Gators. Other offensive leaders were Zippy Broughton and Leilani Correa, each totaling 18 points. Faith Dut led on the boards with her season-high of 11 rebounds.

ABOUT GEORGIA:
Florida and Georgia saw similar opponents during non-conference play: Columbia, Purdue, and Georgia Tech. The Gators defeated all three, whilst the Bulldogs came out ahead against Columbia and Purdue, but fell to Georgia Tech 64-53. In SEC play the only common win between the Gators and Bulldogs was over Texas A&M. Georgia defeated the Aggies 54-50, and Florida came out ahead 63-51.

Throughout the season Georgia has been led on offense by Javyn Nicholson with an average of 16.3 points per game. Nicholson is the only Lady Bulldog currently averaging double-figures in scoring with Zoesha Smith following the closest recording an average of 9.9 points per game. On the boards, Nicholson also leads the Bulldogs with 8.9 rebounds per game. In total, Nicholson has grabbed 231 rebounds this season with 168 being defensive and the other 63 being snagged on offense.
