Florida defeated the Georgia Bulldogs on Saturday evening to close out the fall portion of the 2020 schedule

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The fifth-ranked Florida volleyball team ended the fall portion of its 2020 schedule on a high note, defeating the Georgia Bulldogs in four sets on Saturday afternoon in Exactech Arena.

The Gators finish the fall schedule with a 6-2 record, tied for second in the SEC with Arkansas and Missouri. Georgia closes out its 2020 fall campaign with a 4-4 record overall, splitting each of its four series.

Florida won the first two sets of the match 26-24 and 25-19, before dropping the third frame 25-13. The Gators secured the match with a 25-23 victory in the fourth set.

T’ara Ceasar led the Gators on offense, posting a team-high 18 kills on the evening. Holly Carlton recorded a season-high 15 kills in the match, followed by 14 from Thayer Hall.

Marlie Monserez dished out 47 assists in the four-setter, while Paula Cerame posted a career-high seven assists in the match.

As a team, Florida recorded eight blocks on the night, led by seven from Carlton. Lauren Dooley posted six blocks, followed by two from Nnedi Okammor.

Four Gators tallied double-digit digs for Florida, with Monserez leading the way with 17 – just one off her career-high. Cerame recorded 15 digs of her own on the evening, while Ceasar (12) and Elli McKissock (11) combined for 23.

As the fall portion of the schedule comes to a close, the Gators now await the release of the spring slate.

How it Happened

  *   The Gators got out to the early 4-1 lead in the first set, but Georgia went on a 7-4 run to tie it all up at 8-8. Florida was able to create a bit of distance, taking a four-point lead at the 14-10 mark. Coming out of the media timeout, Florida once again held a four-point lead at the 19-15 mark, but the Bulldogs continued to chip away, eventually tying the frame 19-19. The teams traded points from that point on, until the Gators strung together a 2-0 run to take the set 26-24.
     *   Florida hit .341 in the frame, behind six kills from Hall. Ceasar added five kills of her own, while Carlton pitched in four in the first. Monserez dished out 16 assists and had a team-high seven digs in the frame.
  *   Georgia hopped out to the early advantage, forcing Florida to take a timeout at the 6-3 mark. The Bulldogs continued to control the pace, but Florida pulled to within three at 13-10 to force Georgia into its first timeout. The Gators continued to roll, going on a 4-1 run to pull within one, causing UGA to use its final timeout. Florida closed out the set on an 11-4 run to go up 2-0 in the match.
     *   The Gators once again hit over .300 in the second frame, posting a .324 clip. Carlton led the way with seven kills, while Monserez dished out 12 assists.
  *   The third set was all Georgia from the start, with the Bulldogs taking the 17-10 lead after two Florida timeouts. The Gators pulled to within six at 17-11, but Georgia closed out the frame on an 8-2 run to force a fourth set.
     *   Ceasar led the way with three kills in the frame, while Carlton pitched in two.
  *   With Georgia leading the fourth set 9-8, the Gators strung together a 6-0 run behind the serves of Hall to take the 14-9 lead. The Bulldogs answered with an 8-2 run of their own to pull ahead 17-16 and force Florida to use its final timeout of the frame. With the set tied 18-18, the Gators swung the momentum in their direction, taking a four-point lead at 24-20. Georgia cut the deficit to one at 24-23, but a Hall kill secured the victory for Florida.
     *   Ceasar posted seven kills in the final frame, followed by five from Hall. As a team, the Gators hit .283 in the fourth set, with Monserez recording 13 assists.
