The Tom Jones Memorial was ranked the top event in the world and the Pepsi Florida Relays was ranked the fourth best
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – World Athletics released their most recent Competition Performance Rankings and both the Tom Jones Memorial and Pepsi Florida Relays were ranked in the top-4 of all meets in the world.
World Athletics serves as the international governing body for track & field and cross country. Their global ranking system scores athletes’ performances at meets based on their mark/time and place. These scores are then combined to create a competition score for specific events. Using these scores, athletes as well as competitions can be compared. The 2023 Tom Jones Memorial was ranked the top track meet in the entire world in the most recent rankings. The meet scored 88,579 points, one of two meets earning a score of over 85,000 points. The other meet over 85,000 was the Texas Relays which took place from March 29- April 1.
The 2023 Pepsi Florida Relays also received top marks, earning the fourth overall ranking, placing behind the Tom Jones Memorial, Texas Relays, and Miramar Invitational.
Florida will host the 2024 Pepsi Florida Relays, Tom Jones Memorial, and SEC Outdoor Championship at James G. Pressly Stadium at Percy Beard Track. Prior to the start of the 2024 season, the track will receive a $4.1 million renovation that will include a timing/officials building, a permanent shade structure over the starting block, restroom and concessions renovations, and waterproofing of the grandstand structure.
While the home season may be complete, the Gators continue their 2023 outdoor campaign this weekend at the Virginia Challenge in Charlottesville, Virginia on April 21-23.
