UF T&F: Chang Becomes Second Gator to Set School Record at Triton Invitational

Chang moved up from No. 2 to No. 1 on UF’s Discus Throw All-Time Top 10 list.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The University of Florida Track & Field program doubled its competitors on the second day of action at the Triton Invitational as six Gators participated in Saturday events. For the second consecutive day, a Gator set a new school record in the discus throw.

Kai Chang, after notching the No. 2 mark of UF’s Discus Throw All-Time Top 10 list at Pepsi Florida Relays, topped his distance from a week ago with a throw of 61.65m/202’3”. The senior from Kingston, Jamaica surpassed the school record that was held by Wes Stockbarger for seventeen years (2007). Chang’s impressive performances in the first two meets of the outdoor season have resulted in No. 4 standing in the NCAA in Discus Throw this year.

Before Chang’s performance, Will Gross IV began the day with a third-place finish in the hammer throw. His best throw of 66.04m/216’8” marks the second time that Gross IV has thrown over 66m in 2024.

Logan Montgomery, participating in the men’s shot put, placed seventh with his best throw landing at 16.67m/54’8.25”.

The duo of Alida van Daalen and Gracelyn Leiseth both recorded strong performances in the women’s shot put. In her season debut in the event, Van Daalen recorded a throw of 18.10m/59’4” which is the fifth-best mark in the nation in 2024. Leiseth notched her best mark of her freshman campaign, and in turn collegiate career, as her top throw landed at 16.79m/55’1”. This surpasses the mark she set last week at Pepsi Florida Relays that landed her at No. 10 on the UF All-Time Top 10 List. Her new mark does not change Leiseth’s position on the all-time list.

The day’s action ended with a huge personal record and a first-place finish from Calvin Bostic. The Citra, Florida native had a previous best mark of 51.90m/170’3” until his second throw of the series on Saturday when he launched a new best throw of 55.52m/182’2”. This is the second time in 2024 that Bostic has recorded a personal record in the event as his previous best occurred at the FSU Relays just two weeks ago. Logan Montgomery also participated in the event as he finished in tenth (49.13m/161’2”).
