Jonny Marshall and Bella Sims claim SEC Men’s and Women’s Freshman of the Week
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Jonny Marshall and Bella Sims continue the Gators streak of winning weekly awards, as both were named SEC Men’s and Women’s Freshman of the Week, as announced by the conference Tuesday afternoon.
Marshall earns his second freshman honor of his collegiate career after recording two B-cut times to finish first in the 100 and 200 backstroke at No. 3 Florida’s tri-meet victory against No. 6 Tennessee and No. 25 Kentucky on Nov. 3rd. The Ohio native clocked a 46.80 in the 100 back to set a new season-high and finished the 200 back in 1:44.44. He also leadoff the 200 medley relay B team that swam a 1:27.31 and earned third place.
Sims collected her third-consecutive freshman award, fourth overall, after finishing first in four events at No. 7 Florida’s tri-meet win against No. 6 Tennessee and No. 19 Kentucky. The freshman standout posted two B-cut times and swam a season-best 1:54.05 in the 200 butterfly. She also posted a 1:52.93 in the 200 back to close out her individual events. The Nevada native was the lead-off in the 200 medley relay A team, that clocked a 1:37.37, and was the anchor in the 400 free relay A team who swam a 3:15.48, nearly four seconds in front of Tennessee’s second place finish.
The Gators have a week break before heading to Athens, Georgia, where Florida will compete in the Georgia invite. The meet will begin Nov. 16 and will run through Nov. 18. Prelims are slated for a 10 a.m. start, with finals taking place at 5 p.m. each day.
