AURBUN, AL – Freshman Conor Gesing commenced the opening day of the 2024 SEC Swimming and Diving Championships with a third-place finish (371.30) in the men’s 1-meter A Final on Monday night inside the James. E Martin Aquatic Center.
In the A Final for the men’s 1-meter, Gesing and fellow Gator Peyton Donald were two of eight divers to advance. After Gesing’s first round, the freshman remained in the top-three for the next five rounds and closed out his championship debut with a podium finish and a new career high. Also making his SEC Championship debut, Donald claimed fifth after scoring a 64.70 in his final dive to finish with a score of 347.00.
For the first time in SEC Championship history, team diving events were added to the meet. Each team has three divers who combine to complete a six-dive list, comprising a dive from each group and no more than two from any of the various apparatuses (1-meter, 3-meter and platform). The sum of the six dives creates the team score but is marked exhibition for this year’s championships and does not count towards the final team score. Casey Greenberg, Carina Lumia and Ana Monroy represented Florida was awarded second place after scoring 303.50.
Hear from Head Diving Coach Bryan Gillooly
“What a great first day overall. Our freshman Conor, he stepped it up and Peyton as well making the finals on 1-meter. We had a good experience on the women’s team event. It is going to be a scoring event in the future, so just testing out a couple of things there and will work out to our benefit in the long run. I’m just so proud of these guys. The camaraderie, the support they show each other and the love they have for each other translates into good diving and we are looking forward to more of that in the next couple days.”
