UF S&D: Back-to-Back SEC Sweeps! Florida is the Outright 2024 SEC Swimming & Diving Champion

Back-to-Back SEC Sweeps! Florida is the Outright 2024 SEC Swimming & Diving Champion
The Gators broke more than 40 records throughout the six-days of competition.

AUBURN, Ala. –  For the second-consecutive year and the tenth time in program history, Florida’s men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams conquered SEC Championship titles during the same season.

The last time the program claimed both back-to-back titles was 28 years ago in 1996-97. The last time an SEC program has had a men’s and women’s swimming & diving program win two years in a row was in 2007 and 2008 (Auburn).

Tonight’s wins elevate Florida’s SEC titles total to a league-high 265, with three won this weekend as gymnastics clinched at least a share of 2024 title Friday night. Including lacrosse, UF has 276 conference team titles. Florida’s picked up at least one SEC team title for 46 consecutive seasons – the league’s longest current streak.

The No. 4 Florida men’s team brought home their 12th consecutive SEC Championship on Saturday night, scoring an NCAA and program best 1,584 points. This title marks the 45th SEC Championship in program history, the second-most by any SEC team across all sports (Kentucky MBK – 49). The Gators sit behind their own 13-year consecutive record from 1955-1968 and is one of two programs in the history of the SEC to garner 12 straight titles (Florida – 13 from 1955-1968; Auburn – 16 from 1996-2012).

The No. 3 women’s team had an historic championship run en route to their 19th conference title in school history and their first back-to-back championship title since 1996-97. The women tallied 25 top-ten times and shattered eight school records to finish with another NCAA and program best’s score of 1,391.5.

In total, Florida smashed over 40 different records, including the 200 Men’s Medley Relay’s American Record set by Adam Chaney, Julian Smith, Scotty Buff and Macguire McDuff who zipped to a 1:21.66 to top NC State (1:21.86) who had broken the previous 11-year record of 1:21.88 by Cal’s Daniel Carr, Connor Hoppe, Justin Lynch and Ryan Hoffer.

Diving

Gator Diving scored 226 of Florida’s total points and had at least one diver advance to the championship final in all six events. Freshman duo of Conor Gesing and Ana Monroy made a combined five podium appearances after advancing to the A final in all three diving events. Monroy claimed first in the women’s platform after scoring a 312.70 on the final night to take home her first gold after earning two silvers. Gesing brought home a medal from each spot on the podium.

Hear from the Winning Gators

Head Coach Anthony Nesty

“It’s always great to come to the SEC Championship and win. It was a group effort. The support staff is fantastic. The administration obviously gives us the resources. The most important thing is the development of our athletes in the classroom and in the pool so that they could perform at a high level this week.”

Andrew Taylor, Florida, Men’s 1650 Freestyle

“This is unbelievable. During the race, it felt awesome and this feeling is even better than that. I want to thank my teammates and my coaches. That’s all.”

Bella Sims, Florida, Women’s 200 Backstroke

“It feels amazing to win for this team. It’s definitely special. During the race, I was just trying to focus on my technique and keeping my underwaters consistent. My coach always tells me I’m sloppy in practice so maintaining good technique was really important.”

Jonny Marshall, Florida, Men’s 200 Backstroke

“I’m really thankful to have broken the record today. I learned a good lesson last night about staying focused even when you have good accomplishments already. I’m excited to have the medal but am looking forward to NCAAs and Olympic Trials after that. I need to stay focused and let this build my confidence, but also not let it consume me.”

Josh Liendo, Florida, 100 Freestyle

“I knew it was going to be a tight race. I knew it wasn’t going to be easy because it never is. I just trusted my training, trusted the process and made sure I was getting the details right. In the end, it worked out.”

Camila Monroy, Florida, Women’s Platform

“I feel so happy and can’t believe it. I just tried to be chill on every day and be focused during the competition until the end and it worked. I feel so happy.” Lainy Kruger, Florida, Women’s 400 Freestyle Relay “Unbelievable. I love our team. It’s been such a blessing to race with these girls. I just want to thank the coaches, my family, my team for really helping us get here. I’m just really proud of us.” Julian Smith, Florida, Men’s 400 Freestyle Relay “It was the icing on top for our week. It felt great to win the relay at the end.”
