UF MTN: No. 10 Florida Sweeps No. 14 Georgia on Friday Night

Gators win big in important rivalry matchup

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – No. 10 Florida (9-1, 5-0 SEC) dominated No. 14 Georgia (6-3, 1-3 SEC) by a score of 7-0 on Friday night at the Alfred A. Ring Tennis Complex.

The Gators did not drop a set in any of their six singles matches en route to the first sweep over the Bulldogs since a 4-0 victory in 2010.

UF set the tone early by winning the doubles point with victories on No. 2 and No. 3.

Will Grant and Johannes Ingildsen improved to 5-0 as a doubles pairing while Andy Andrade and Ben Shelton won their second-straight match together as Florida took the doubles point for the third dual match in a row.

With doubles tied at one, Andrade and Shelton pulled themselves back from a 4-0 deficit in the tiebreaker to tally seven-straight points to secure doubles for the Gators.

In singles at No. 1, Duarte Vale cruised to an impressive victory over No. 9 Trent Bryde while on No. 2, Sam Riffice used a first-set tiebreaker winner to propel him to a smooth 6-4 second set victory.

Vale moved to 6-3 in dual matches this season and 14-3 overall while Riffice improved to 9-1 in dual matches and 14-4 overall.

Andrade, who was last week’s Southeastern Conference Co-Player of the Week, went to 9-1 in dual matches this season and 16-1 overall in the 2020-21 season with his victory at No. 3.

Blaise Bicknell, last week’s SEC Newcomer of the Week, continued his unbelievable start to the dual match and 2020-21 season as a whole with his 17th-straight victory. He is now 17-0 overall and 8-0 in dual matches this season after his victory on No. 4.

Shelton made quick work of his opponent at No. 5, winning his sixth-straight match and improving to 16-2 overall and 9-1 in dual matches this season.

Josh Goodger handled his opponent at No. 6 to win his second dual match of the season and improve to 8-0 overall and 2-0 in dual matches this season.

UF will now host No. 3 Tennessee on Sunday at noon ET.
