UF MTN: Men’s Tennis Wins Both Ends of Double-Header with Tennessee State

The Gators add two crucial midweek wins before continuing their conference schedule this weekend.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Florida Gators Men’s Tennis won both matches of their double header with Tennessee State University on Tuesday.

Florida won the first match 6-1 and the second 4-1, with both of Tennessee State’s points coming via forfeit by Florida of court six in singles, as the Gators chose to only man five singles courts.

How it happened
Florida claimed the doubles point in match one to open what would be a dominant day. The Gators’ new pairing of Kevin Edengren and Nate Bonetto posted a 6-4 win on court two, and Jeremy Jin/Henry Jefferson sealed the first point with a 7-6 (7-1) tiebreaker win on court three.

In match one, the Gators went on to dominate all five singles courts played, posting straight-sets victories on each.

In match two, with the Gators first taking the two doubles courts played. Florida forfeited the third doubles court. Bonetto teamed with Tanapatt Nirundorn for the first time this dual season, reuniting after going 9-5 last season as a duo. They and Jin/Jefferson both won their sets 6-2.

Singles play in match two was more of the same for the Orange and Blue, as they finished each of the three winning singles matches in straight sets.

Bonetto posted two strong performances on court two, his highest court assignment of the dual season. Bonetto’s matches were the first singles courts to finish in both of the Florida’s duals, first claiming victory 6-3, 6-2 in the first match, and then dominating to a 6-1, 6-0 mark in the second match.

Edengren continued his strong return to the singles lineup, posting two wins on court four, just two days after his win on court six against Tennessee on Sunday. Edengren took the winning fourth point in the first match with his 6-4, 6-3 performance. He backed that up with another 6-4, 6-1 showing in match two.

Jefferson won both singles matches on court 5, and claimed the winning fourth point in the second match, 6-1, 7-5. His first match was a 7-6, 7-5 battle, highlighted by a 7-0 showing in the tiebreaker of the first set.

From Head Coach Adam Steinberg
On what a day like this means for the team…
“Any time we can get two wins on the board after losing two in a row feels great… Can’t say enough good things about Tennessee State, they had great character, and they fought really hard which was good for us. They didn’t give in, they didn’t go away, they made us work for it. We got everything out of it that we needed to, and now we look forward to returning to SEC Play.”

Next up
The Gators now head to the state of Alabama for two more SEC Matches, first with Auburn on Friday, then in Tuscaloosa facing Alabama on Sunday
