UF MTN: Ingildsen Wins 100th Career Singles Match as Gators Down USF

Gators rebound from dropping doubles point to sweep singles

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – No. 9 Florida (2-0) defeated USF (0-1), 6-1, on Sunday at the Alfred A. Ring Tennis Complex as redshirt-senior Johannes Ingildsen won his 100th career singles match.

Ingildsen ties Elliot Orkin (2014-17) on the Gators’ all-time career singles wins list at No. 8. The leader is Justin O’Neal (1997-2000) with 120 singles wins in his career.

“We are really proud of Johannes,” head coach Bryan Shelton said. “He’s been a consummate professional for us as far as the way he goes about competing every single time he takes the court. He’s won a lot of big matches for us over the last four-plus years and for him to get to 100 is not a huge surprise. He is a guy that seems to maximize and get the most out of himself. He’s a true Gator. He loves the Gators, he is going to fight until the very end. I think the way that he won today says it all about his career here is he’ll just find a way to get it done in the end.”

Ingildsen won a three-set thriller to cap off a strong singles performance from UF on Sunday as Florida went 13-1 in matches over the weekend against FAU and USF.

Ingildsen said that being among Gator greats means the world to him.

“That means a lot,” Ingildsen said. “That’s something I can look back on later in my life and be proud of. I’ve worked so hard here at this university, so just to see that I’m up there with some of the best Gator greats in the men’s tennis program means a lot and I can be very proud of that.”

After dropping the doubles point, UF stormed back to win all six singles matches with Duarte Vale (No. 1), Sam Riffice (No. 2), Andy Andrade (No. 3), Ben Shelton (No. 5) and Blaise Bicknell (No. 6) winning in straight-sets while Ingildsen finished off his opponent in three sets.

Florida will now prepare to travel to Austin, Texas for the ITA Kickoff Weekend on Friday against Oklahoma State at 10 a.m. ET. The Gators would then play either Texas or Arizona on Saturday at 2 p.m. ET.
