UF MGOLF: Biondi Named to Spring Haskins Award Watch List

The Haskins Award is considered the most prestigious award in collegiate golf, and is presented annually to the most outstanding male golfer.

ORLANDO, Fla. – Redshirt Junior Fred Biondi was named to the first Spring Haskins Award Watch List by Golf Channel and Golfweek on Monday.

Celebrating its 52nd year, the Fred Haskins Award presented by Stifel is considered the most prestigious award in collegiate golf, and is presented annually to the most outstanding male golfer. The winner of the oldest individual college golf award is voted on by players, coaches, golf SIDS, and select golf media members and will be announced in early June.

Leading the Gators all spring, Biondi has won two events, including his first collegiate win at the VyStar Gators Invitational. He set the tournament record at 196 (-4) to lead Florida to its third consecutive home title and second straight to start the spring.

He added his second victory in the regular season finale at the Calusa Cup, in a field that featured seven of the top-25 teams in the nation. Biondi also leads the team in stroke average (69.7) and birdies per round (4.2). He has posted three top-5 and four top-10 finishes this season.

A native of Sao Paulo, Brazil, he has been named SEC Golfer of the Week twice, Golfweek Player of the Week and his last five outings he has had two first-place finishes, a runner-up, a T7 and a runner-up finish at the Latin America Amateur Championship (LAAC).

Biondi was also ranked the No. 1 player in the final March Arnold Palmer Cup Rankings and is currently the No. 2 player by Golfstat and No. 4 by Golfweek.

The program has had one winner of the award, which came in 1979 by Phil Hancock. He was a three-time All-American, a two-time Southeastern Conference Champion and played on the 1973 National Championship team.

The Florida men’s golf team heads to the SEC Championship in St. Simonds Island, Ga., April 20-24.
