2022 Florida Football Postgame Quotes
Billy Napier, Florida Head Coach
No. 1 Georgia 42, Florida 20
October 29, 2022

Opening statement…
“Not good enough. You have to coach better. You have to lead better. Players need to play better.
Simple enough. I think execution can be better. I think we dug ourselves a whole in the first half
against a really good football team that has good personnel, is well coached, that plays
complimentary ball. I will say that what I respect about that group of men in the locker room is that
they really care. They worked hard on getting to know each other, working together, playing this
game the way, it is intended to be played, and that is for each other. I think we saw a little bit of that
challenge them at halftime, and certainly they responded in the right way. We were able to get a
score, create some takeaways, and get it back to a game, but ultimately weren’t able to do
enough there to take advantage of some of the opportunities that we had. It is what it is. I think the
key here is that we continue to learn from our experience, that we continue to grow and develop
the character of our team, that we improve as coaches, as leaders, and certainly continue to
develop football players. This game is just that. It’s a game. The special thing about the game is who
you do it with. I gained a level of respect for that group in terms of how they responded at halftime.
That’s what I would say I respect the most: they care. They really do care. I think today might have
been a turning point to some degree relative to what is really in there, in your heart, in your soul,
between your ears. I think we are seeing some things that we could learn. Tons of respect for the
football team that Georgia has. There’s no hiding that. They have a fantastic team, really good
players, and they’re well coached. We learned a lot about what we need to do to get our program
to where it can be competitive against a team like that.”
On fourth down offense…
“It’s a turnover. It’s a turnover on downs. Turnover effected the outcome of the game. No different
than them turning the ball over allowed us to get back in the game. We don’t convert on fourth
down and we turn the ball over to them. We had our opportunities. We can coach better, and we
can play better.”
On recruiting…
“Evaluation of recruitment is always important. To go where we want to go, to win an SEC
Championship, to win a divisional championship, to win our conference, to win a National
Championship you got to do it all really well. You got to evaluate. You got to recruit. You got to
develop. You got to impact who they are as people. Those are all areas that we wake up every day
and we work extremely hard at. There’s no question that evaluation of recruitment is very important.”
On the comeback effort…
“We got it to one score, and they rushed the ball very effective in that possession and ended up
scoring a touchdown to get it back to two scores. We will watch the film and we will see a lot of
areas that we can do better. We can coach better, and we can play better. But yes, they got the
momentum back when they scored. I think in that drive they rushed the ball primarily after the
quarterback had thrown a handful of interceptions.”

On halftime adjustments…
“We got a lot of work left to do. I think that it was one of the things that the players felt like needed to
improve. One of the things you do, that I really believe in, is that you ask a lot of questions in the
beginning. Where are we? What are the issues? What are the things that we need to resolve? I think
that togetherness was one of those things. I think how hard you play is a reflection of what type of
teammate you are. When you turn the tape on, if you are loafing, if there’s a lack of effort on the
film, then you are not a very good teammate. I think you start there. I told the players in the locker
room just now, ‘As long as I’m coaching here, we are going to play this game for the people that we
play it with.’ I think that that takes time to develop. I think that we are getting somewhere in that
regard.”
On challenging the team…
“We walked into the locker room with a lot of disappointed players, that were emotional, that care,
that have passion, that want to do their job for the team. There’s an old war term called a ‘foxhole
guy.’ A guy that you can trust. A guy that is loyal. A guy that you can turn your back from and know
that he is going to do what he is supposed to do and you’re doing the same thing on your side. I think
this game, there’s no comparison military wise, but I think there’s some things that we can learn a
lesson from relative to those intangibles.”

15 Anthony Richardson, Sophomore, Quarterback

On being more aggressive with the run game in the second half…
“I was just trying to play physical. Get the ball moving, you know, get the offense rolling a little bit.
Obviously, we couldn’t move it that well in the first half, so I tried to help us a little bit and tried to be a
little bit more physical on the ground.”
On what the struggles on the first few series were a product of…
“A little bit of both. They had a great pass rush. Our communication was a little off. We didn’t
execute that well, and they executed a little better than we did. So, that was pretty much it.”
On scoring 17-straight points after going down 28-3…
“That’s just us. That’s nothing new for us. We’ve been in plenty of games like that before this year and
we’ve always fought through it. So, that’s just us. That’s just how we play ball. We try not to put
ourselves in a hole like that early, but that’s just how we play ball. We like to fight and just play
aggressive.”
On what makes Georgia’s defense hard to break…
“I wouldn’t say that it’s hard to break. They just have big guys on their team. They have a great
scheme. Whenever you have a team like that, it’s pretty easy for them to run their assignments and
do what they do. If they have 11 people doing their job, it’s kind of hard to affect them and stop
them. But, they have a great defense and a great scheme…”
On what he saw on the 78-yard touchdown to Xzavier Henderson…
“That’s just looking at the coverage. The call we had there was basically like a quick out to Ricky
[Pearsall] and I was looking to throw that, but I saw the corner squat, and I just knew the hole shot
was going to be there eventually, so I waited and I saw Xzavier there, and he just ran.”

94 Tyreak Sapp, Redshirt Freshman, Defensive Lineman

On what the halftime message was from Coach Napier…
“The message was just, ‘pull together, we’ve got to come together. We’ve got to be tight knit
throughout every position group. Everybody on the team. Offense, defense, we got to be
complementary to each other. We got to come out in that second half, and we’ve got to play
better, more-tight knit and more together football.’ That’s it.”
On having three takeaways while also giving up 500-plus yards…
“You got to kind of take it for what it is. You’ve got to look at it, you got to kind of accept and you
got to understand that what happened was a product of how we played at times. And then the
good things that we made happen were things that we had to make happen… The better we play
together as a team, as a defense, the better outcomes we had.”

On what lessons they take from Georgia…
“That’s the number-one team in the country. They have every right to that. And we just got to
understand, we got to evaluate ourselves and understand what happened today. What happened
and how can we build on this? How can we build on ourselves as a team and as an organization?
Just how can we build on that and be better from all the mistakes, just everything that happened.
Just coming together better as a team and just playing more complimentary football. That’s all.”
On Brock Bowers…
“That’s a tough kid. He’s very smart in between the ears. Kid knows what he’s doing. He can go out
there, he can slice you up. He’s fast. He’s all big, fast. Everything that you expect out of that guy. But
you know, it’s always a way to stop somebody. We all put on our cleats the same. There’s always a
way to stop somebody.”

2022 Florida Football Quotes
Kirby Smart, Georgia Head Coach
No. 1 Georgia 42, Florida 20
October 29, 2022

Opening statement…
“What a great environment and great game. To the Dooley’s back home in Athens I know they are
together. It meant a lot for us to win that game for them. All that Vince [Dooley] has meant to our
University and such an ambassador of our program and really all of college football. I know if he was
looking down on that one he would have enjoyed the first half. I don’t know that he would have
enjoyed the second one. He has meant so much to us and in honor of him and their family, it was
special. It was a tough time for that to happen. Our fans were also here, the environment was good.
We lost momentum in the second half, faced resiliency and stared it in the eye and we didn’t blink
and I’m really proud of our players. There was a time there that we lost momentum and that has
happened to us more this year than it did last year and we bounced back. I am really proud of the
players.”
On the drive after Florida made the score 28-20…
“That was probably the drive of the year so far right. They answered the bell. It’s 28-20 and weve lost
momentum. We had 3 kickoff returns in a row and we weren’t getting field position and Kenny
[McIntosh] had had the fumble. I thought Kenny McIntosh showed a little something tonight. When
he came out after that fumble and had that eye of the tiger look and he wanted the ball and he
was running the ball hard and physical and getting yards after contact. A lot of credit to the
offensive line but also a lot of credit to Kenny as well. That drive that you are referencing was big for
us.”
On what he said to Kenny McIntosh after the touchdown…
“I told him that he was a bad M’Fer. He is tough, he is physical, he got after it and he responded.
That’s what I talk about. You’ve got an opportunity to show resiliency which is one of our four DNA
characteristics. Every NFL scout and every Georgia fan watching will remember how he responded.
He ran the ball with vicious attitude. Just a contact seeking back.”
On Jalen Carter…
“I couldn’t tell you how he looked because I was trying to watch the back end and make sure our
adjustments were there. We will watch the tape and evaluate it. It is great that he fought himself to
get back and rehabbed himself to get back. He wanted to play. He loves this team and, in a day
and age where some kids don’t care about the team, he cares about the team and he wanted to
play. He took on the role we asked him to take on and hopefully he continues to get healthy. We
need him. We are missing some guys in depth in the front. As we play more snaps we struggle and it
showed in the second half there.”
On what this win does going into the game next week…
“Any win, any win exudes confidence. You guys criticize the wins, I am great with the wins. In the SEC,
when you beat Florida, any win. They are hard to come by. They are tough, they are physical, they
are hard fought. I am proud of them and the way our guys played.”

On Vince Dooley…
“We had just landed in Jacksonville, so we took off and were not aware of anything and then the
phones started dinging and the text messages started coming through. His son who I have worked on
staff with, sent me a text. Claude [Felton] sent me a text. We knew that it was kind of imminent. I got
to visit with him a little last week and sat down. He was in the training room and we got to talk for a
while and of course I did not know that it would be the last time, but that is probably my fondest
memory. Even then he was telling stories about Georgia football and he has been around my family.
They have been in the box during the SEC Championship and the National Championships and my
kids have gotten to be around him and its funny because my kids had no idea. They were like, who is
this old coach, who is this old guy. Now they know the history and what all he stood for and what his
family did for this university. Got a lot of respect for him.”

13 Stetson Bennett IV, Senior, Quarterback

On the win…
“This was a good team win for us. We made some mistakes and took some punches, but we
overcame them. This team can be as good as it wants to be based on the way we practice and
prepare. We have high expectations for ourselves.”
On Brock Bowers…
“Dude made a really good play and tipped it then Brock [Bowers] spun 360 full speed. It was pretty
impressive. Then on the fourth down fade when they jumped offsides, I knew I was going to him.
There was man to man on him, he ran a fade route and I gave it to him. He went up and made the
play then we went down and scored after that. You need guys that you can count on and I would
say that is most of the offense but he makes plays.”
On the environment in Jacksonville…
“I think whenever the momentum is on our side our fans are a little louder than when the momentum
is on their side. Our fans did a great job. I think they came out and were ready for it and we are
going to need them next week to come out and be loud the whole game. Especially when
something is going bad, that doesn’t mean they can be quiet. Keep it loud the whole game.”
On playing in this neutral site game…
“There are more neutral site games today. Everybody talks about it being 50-50 down the middle but
we played in one like that against Oregon. It is cool but you really don’t know anything else because
we have only played them here.”

29 Chris Smith, Senior, Defensive Back

On the victory…
“It felt good to get this victory. It’s a great win against a great team. We had the offense’s back out
there and they had ours. We were locked in on our game plan. We had a couple of things that didn’t
go our way, but that happens in the course of a game. The key was the way we responded.”

19 Brock Bowers, Sophomore, Tight End

On his long touchdown catch…
“I was kind of surprised I caught it. I really didn’t see it under the defender hit it with his hand. Then it
was like things went into slow motion. It’s like the ball was just hanging there. When I caught it, I
looked up at the scoreboard and saw that no one was around me, so I just started running.”

63 Sedrick Van Pran, Redshirt Sophomore, Center

On the team’s play…
“One of our pillars is resiliency. Each team is different, each game is different, but we know if we play
hard all four quarters that good things can happen. We will keep focusing on all the things we need
to do to be successful.”
