UF BSB: Mace Drafted by Cleveland in Second Round of MLB Draft

The selection makes Tommy Mace the 17th Gators pitcher to be drafted in the first-five rounds dating back to head coach Kevin O’Sullivan’s arrival in 2008, a total which ranks third among all NCAA programs.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – University of Florida right-handed pitcher Tommy Mace<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__floridagators.com_roster.aspx-3Frp-5Fid-3D14223&d=DwIF-g&c=sJ6xIWYx-zLMB3EPkvcnVg&r=o5LKAX7slotfFMyE71jI7L22NYBIi1-KbRGNSXudTPo&m=KNIac6tgedD43Y0ao2ef_uhwgyWlwca3P3tNheDgjG4&s=GPESHkryAzyPesp9Clgvnz5XjRkI5z6kl1oqZpvdDYg&e= > was chosen by the Cleveland Indians with the 69th overall pick in the second round of the 2021 MLB Draft on Monday.

Mace is the second Gator to be selected in this year’s draft, following outfielder Jud Fabian<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__floridagators.com_roster.aspx-3Frp-5Fid-3D14217&d=DwIF-g&c=sJ6xIWYx-zLMB3EPkvcnVg&r=o5LKAX7slotfFMyE71jI7L22NYBIi1-KbRGNSXudTPo&m=KNIac6tgedD43Y0ao2ef_uhwgyWlwca3P3tNheDgjG4&s=kjswcf017dkHYCsR9sYDuh5vHR2nJv483e2ORqgJ9nU&e= >, who went 40th overall to the Boston Red Sox<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__floridagators.com_news_2021_7_12_baseball-2Dred-2Dsox-2Dselect-2Dfabian-2Din-2Dsecond-2Dround-2Dof-2D2021-2Dmlb-2Ddraft.aspx&d=DwIF-g&c=sJ6xIWYx-zLMB3EPkvcnVg&r=o5LKAX7slotfFMyE71jI7L22NYBIi1-KbRGNSXudTPo&m=KNIac6tgedD43Y0ao2ef_uhwgyWlwca3P3tNheDgjG4&s=0aMkOCb_fhx7FCfznsc-sxSC_T75AikuMknehPVw2mA&e= >. This marks the second time Mace has been drafted, as he was previously picked by the Cincinnati Reds out of high school in the 12th round of the 2017 MLB Draft.

The selection effectively makes Mace the 14th-highest Gators pitcher to ever be drafted and the 26th-highest draft pick in program history. Mace is also 17th pitcher to be drafted in the first-five rounds out of Florida since head coach Kevin O’Sullivan<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__floridagators.com_coaches.aspx-3Frc-3D1291&d=DwIF-g&c=sJ6xIWYx-zLMB3EPkvcnVg&r=o5LKAX7slotfFMyE71jI7L22NYBIi1-KbRGNSXudTPo&m=KNIac6tgedD43Y0ao2ef_uhwgyWlwca3P3tNheDgjG4&s=kL7MfYBe0Q66yQAXS1XHNOUB0ouhACgZ2gB4VL0YcKI&e= >’s 2008 arrival in Gainesville – a total which is tied for third nationally. In total, Mace is the 50th Gators pitcher to be drafted during O’Sullivan’s tenure and the 90th player overall.

As a third-year hurler in 2021, Mace paced the Gators with 90.1 innings pitched and 113 strikeouts, totals that ranked ninth and tied-eighth in the SEC, respectively. That output also translated to a career-high 11.3 strikeouts-per-nine innings. The right-hander finished with a 6-2 record accompanied by a 4.38 ERA and one save. Opposing hitters batted .256 against Mace.

Over the course of four seasons in Orange and Blue, the Tampa, Fla. native totaled 269.2 innings of work on the mound and commanded an impressive 22-7 record. Mace struck out 258 batters during his time in Gainesville and produced a 4.37 ERA.

Outside of his accomplishments on the diamond for the Gators, Mace competed for the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team in 2019. Off the field, he is a two-time SEC Community Service Team honoree, having represented Florida in winning the award in both 2020 and 2021.

What They’re Saying About Mace

MLB.com
“…In some ways, Mace is still the same consistent college starter with a four-pitch mix and a feel for how to use it well. But there have been some developments in his game that could lead to him being more highly regarded than he was in 2020. He’s added a four-seamer up in the zone with a much higher spin rate while still having an outstanding sinking two-seamer, up to 96 mph and often with cutting action, to rely on. He’s improved his curve, also with more spin and his changeup has gotten better. Mace has gotten a bit bigger physically, which could help with consistency of velocity and stuff. He’s always been good at throwing strikes, but has been more a contact, ground-ball kind of pitcher, rather than one who misses tons of bats. He did increase his strikeout rate while continuing to fill up the strike zone in 2021.”

Baseball America
“…Scouts critiqued the life on Mace’s fastball last season, and this spring they’ve seen him try and throw more four-seam fastballs, but he still doesn’t get a ton of swings and misses with the pitch. Instead, he relies on spotting it at a high level in each quadrant of the strike zone. Mace also throws a hard slider/cutter in the mid-to-upper 80s, a slurvy 78-80 mph curveball and a mid-to-upper-80s changeup with slight arm-side fade. None of Mace’s secondary pitches projects as plus and his lack of bat-missing stuff makes scouts wonder about his true upside, though he did achieve a career-best strikeout rate (11.3 K/9) through 90.1 innings this spring, while still walking just 2.1 batters per nine…”
