UF BSB: Gators Welcome No. 2 Razorbacks to Florida Ballpark

Florida has won two-straight series vs. Arkansas at home (2018, 2014) and own a 7-4 record across the last 11 meetings in Gainesville.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Florida hosts No. 2 Arkansas from Thursday, April 7 to Saturday, April 9 for the first time since 2018, when the Gators won the final two games (17-2, 5-4) to claim the series after dropping the opener (6-3).

The three-game set kicks off at 6 p.m. ET on Thursday evening, airing on SEC Network. Games two and three will stream on SEC Network+ on Friday (6:30 p.m.) and Saturday (1 p.m.).

While the all-time series has been fairly even across its history (Arkansas leads, 35-32), the Razorbacks (22-5, 7-2 SEC) have won five-straight games against the Gators (19-10, 3-6 SEC). Despite the recent track record, Florida has won each of the last two series in Gainesville and is 7-4 across the previous 11 home matchups including a two-game home winning streak. Florida is 14-21 against Arkansas under head coach Kevin O’Sullivan<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__floridagators.com_coaches.aspx-3Frc-3D1445&d=DwIGaQ&c=sJ6xIWYx-zLMB3EPkvcnVg&r=o5LKAX7slotfFMyE71jI7L22NYBIi1-KbRGNSXudTPo&m=WK6MVbUXK-HB48awsZnCQht-PHl0LeHqvoST1Q6oK6FEp88u_Nik9daDgh0-Wfr6&s=EuzKBw8EWbPo2GZZfO3Lz_pjG-yfNZV3Vgq1evR1E8A&e= >, but own an 8-7 mark at home during his tenure.

Entering week eight of the season, Florida is ranked in the USA Today Coaches Poll (No. 22) and NCBWA Poll (No. 23). This is the first time during the 2022 season that Florida has been unranked in the D1Baseball Top 25.

LAST TIME OUT
Florida is coming off a 13-3 Tuesday win over Florida A&M, during which the Gators improved to 8-0 in midweek games and 10-1 vs. in-state teams (three top-25 wins in-state). Last week, Florida went 1-3, picking up a midweek win (W, 6-3) vs. No. 5 Florida State in Jacksonville before dropping three games at No. 23 Georgia in Athens (L, 7-6 / L, 6-1 / L, 14-8).

SCOUTING THE RAZORBACKS
Arkansas enters the series with a 22-5 record on the year, including a 7-2 mark in SEC play and a 2-1 record on the road. The Razorbacks have won five of their last six games and are coming off a series victory against Mississippi State, having taken two of three games at home vs. the Bulldogs. In the SEC Preseason Coaches Poll, Arkansas was picked to win the SEC West while garnering three votes to win the SEC Championship.

HOT AT HOME
Florida is 39-9 across its last 48 regular season games at Florida Ballpark, including 24-6 in their last 30. In the inaugural  2021 season of Florida Ballpark, the Gators delivered a dominant 28-9 record at home. Florida closed out the regular season with eight-straight home series victories, going 27-4 at home in the team’s final 31 regular-season contests and losing just one game in the final 13 matchups in that span.

HISTORIC HOME RUN PACE
Florida ranks fifth in the nation with 57 home runs. The Gators are on pace to hit 110 home runs in the regular season alone this year, which would mark the program’s third-highest total ever, as well as the most under O’Sullivan (2018 – 100) and the team’s top total since 2002 (111). Catcher/designated hitter Mac Guscette<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__floridagators.com_roster.aspx-3Frp-5Fid-3D15095&d=DwIGaQ&c=sJ6xIWYx-zLMB3EPkvcnVg&r=o5LKAX7slotfFMyE71jI7L22NYBIi1-KbRGNSXudTPo&m=WK6MVbUXK-HB48awsZnCQht-PHl0LeHqvoST1Q6oK6FEp88u_Nik9daDgh0-Wfr6&s=FbB46jo5ZMKl9h0EYw4tVtEzEaOd_sBFJfv11DXPXos&e= > hit the Gators’ 50th homer on March 31 at No. 23 Georgia in Florida’s 26th game of the season. In 2021, first baseman/designated hitter Kris Armstrong<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__floridagators.com_roster.aspx-3Frp-5Fid-3D15090&d=DwIGaQ&c=sJ6xIWYx-zLMB3EPkvcnVg&r=o5LKAX7slotfFMyE71jI7L22NYBIi1-KbRGNSXudTPo&m=WK6MVbUXK-HB48awsZnCQht-PHl0LeHqvoST1Q6oK6FEp88u_Nik9daDgh0-Wfr6&s=mKk1qHy_4Gu-rIE5N_IY5Bz9MadM5ELK-z7Kr6Cgoto&e= > hit Florida’s 50th homer in the 41st game of the season on April 30, 2021 off of No. 2 Vanderbilt’s Kumar Rocker. The Orange & Blue recorded their 40th home run of the season in just their 20th game on March 20 at Alabama, whereas last year, Florida’s 40th home run occurred in the team’s 33rd game – on April 11 at Tennessee.

GO-DEEP DUO
2021 All-American outfielder J. Fabian leads the SEC with 13 home runs (T-second nationally) while outfielder Wyatt Langford<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__floridagators.com_roster.aspx-3Frp-5Fid-3D15097&d=DwIGaQ&c=sJ6xIWYx-zLMB3EPkvcnVg&r=o5LKAX7slotfFMyE71jI7L22NYBIi1-KbRGNSXudTPo&m=WK6MVbUXK-HB48awsZnCQht-PHl0LeHqvoST1Q6oK6FEp88u_Nik9daDgh0-Wfr6&s=ABouijUnpGPuZZH_Lf8115Cw072VFT3vEDk-0hxv61k&e= > ranks T-fourth in the SEC and T-26th nationally with 10 homers. Fabian and Langford are one of four pairs of teammates in the nation with 10-plus home runs each (Texas, Boston College, Old Dominion). Either Fabian or Langford has homered in four-straight games, but from March 12-25, one of the two players homered in eight-consecutive games.

AND THAT’S A PAIR OF RBI (PRODUCERS)
J. Fabian and Langford are tied for the team lead in RBI, having each collected 31 over the team’s first 29 games. Most of their production has come after the first week of the season, with 30 of Langford’s 31 RBI coming over the Gators last 24 games, while 29 of Fabian’s 31 have been delivered in the club’s last 22 games. Fabian failed to collect an RBI six times in the team’s first seven games, but since then has failed to collect an RBI only seven times in the following 22 games. Both have delivered at least one RBI in 16 contests, with Langford having collected four or more in three of his 16 RBI games. After their slow RBI start, at least one of the two has delivered an RBI in 22 of the Gators’ last 24 games.

MARCH ON, JUD
During the month of March, J. Fabian led the SEC in total bases (54), slugging percentage (.857), walks (22) and home runs (10).

STATE OF THE DEFENSE
With 20 errors in 1,052 defensive chances, Florida ranks 11th nationally with a .981 fielding percentage.

SCANNING THE BARCO
As one of 45 amateur players named to the Golden Spikes Award Midseason Watch List this past week, left-handed pitcher Hunter Barco<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__floridagators.com_roster.aspx-3Frp-5Fid-3D15091&d=DwIGaQ&c=sJ6xIWYx-zLMB3EPkvcnVg&r=o5LKAX7slotfFMyE71jI7L22NYBIi1-KbRGNSXudTPo&m=WK6MVbUXK-HB48awsZnCQht-PHl0LeHqvoST1Q6oK6FEp88u_Nik9daDgh0-Wfr6&s=a4oShHm7XW3Zm1lAPADv9dGTEOKyEpbCnyasgEzsiNI&e= > owns a 5-1 record with a 1.87 ERA (sixth in SEC) through his first-seven starts. Among the top-50 qualifying pitchers for the national ERA title, Barco’s 43 1/3 innings pitched rank sixth. The Florida ace also ranks eighth in the nation with a 0.76 WHIP and is among the top-five arms in the SEC with 58 strikeouts (second), 43 1/3 IP (third) and a .169 batting average against (fourth). With 58 strikeouts (T-24th nationally) vs. seven walks, Barco’s ratios translate to 12.0 strikeouts per nine, 1.5 walks per nine and an 8.3 strikeout-to-walk ratio. The sophomore* southpaw is 12-2 across his last 17 starts dating back to the 2021 season.

BASH BROTHERS
In the fourth inning vs. Florida A&M on Tuesday, brothers Jud and Deric Fabian<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__floridagators.com_roster.aspx-3Frp-5Fid-3D15119&d=DwIGaQ&c=sJ6xIWYx-zLMB3EPkvcnVg&r=o5LKAX7slotfFMyE71jI7L22NYBIi1-KbRGNSXudTPo&m=WK6MVbUXK-HB48awsZnCQht-PHl0LeHqvoST1Q6oK6FEp88u_Nik9daDgh0-Wfr6&s=GL7TkbyCH7a9ycU1JYS3kwJeAomZMRc85xG2H8jnNx0&e= > hit home runs in a span of three batters, representing the first time both Fabians have gone deep in the same game – let alone the same inning – in their careers.

HERE COMES THE JUD
After becoming the fifth player in program history to eclipse 20 homers in a season in 2021, J. Fabian is not only leading the SEC with 13 long balls, but also ranks third in the conference with 27 walks (T-15th nationally) while striking out just 24 times. Fabian recorded his seventh career multi-homer game on March 22 vs. Bethune-Cookman and now sits at 45 career homers, which ranks sixth all-time at Florida. The Ocala, Fla. native’s next home run milestone will come at 47 homers, where Gator great Mike Zunino sits in fifth. Fabian is averaging one home run every 8.2 at bats (13 home runs in 106 at bats).

BREAKOUT SOPHS
Having batted .301/.396/.470 with All-SEC Freshman Team honors in 2021, outfielder Sterlin Thompson<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__floridagators.com_roster.aspx-3Frp-5Fid-3D15108&d=DwIGaQ&c=sJ6xIWYx-zLMB3EPkvcnVg&r=o5LKAX7slotfFMyE71jI7L22NYBIi1-KbRGNSXudTPo&m=WK6MVbUXK-HB48awsZnCQht-PHl0LeHqvoST1Q6oK6FEp88u_Nik9daDgh0-Wfr6&s=skpgt4JkHmlTxIIAzfu72TSSq3t-oBsQHPmHVG1VzjE&e= > has improved to the tune of a .348/.421/.609 line as a sophomore, leading Florida with 40 hits. Thompson owns a career-high seven home runs in roughly half as many games as last season (five homers in 55 games). Across Florida’s four games last week, Thompson led the team in batting (.412), OBP (.444) and hits (seven).

Coming off a freshman 2021 season where he had one hit in four at bats, Langford leads the 2022 Gators in batting, RBI (31) and steals (five) with a .349/.432/.688 batting line. Langford boasts 10 home runs in 109 at bats (homer every 10.9 at bats), and is looking to become the sixth player in team history to eclipse 20 homers in a season.

EASY AS BLAKE
Making his first-11 career appearances, right-handed reliever Blake Purnell<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__floridagators.com_roster.aspx-3Frp-5Fid-3D15103&d=DwIGaQ&c=sJ6xIWYx-zLMB3EPkvcnVg&r=o5LKAX7slotfFMyE71jI7L22NYBIi1-KbRGNSXudTPo&m=WK6MVbUXK-HB48awsZnCQht-PHl0LeHqvoST1Q6oK6FEp88u_Nik9daDgh0-Wfr6&s=I6OreslIo2SYoeqbty6rx5Qo2tOUgEVOMiakWaA9UVM&e= > did not allow an earned run across 19 1/3 innings to open the season. Purnell now boasts a 1.11 ERA with a 0.86 WHIP, 23 strikeouts and two walks across 24 1/3 frames.

SULLY WINS 600TH
With a 13-6 victory to clinch the series over Alabama on March 19, O’Sullivan won his 600th game as Florida head coach – on the same day Georgia head coach Scott Stricklin<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__floridagators.com_staff.aspx-3Fstaff-3D487&d=DwIGaQ&c=sJ6xIWYx-zLMB3EPkvcnVg&r=o5LKAX7slotfFMyE71jI7L22NYBIi1-KbRGNSXudTPo&m=WK6MVbUXK-HB48awsZnCQht-PHl0LeHqvoST1Q6oK6FEp88u_Nik9daDgh0-Wfr6&s=tGkY6UYXbdEogt6x6Sjp7nmiA3U30vcxvB2YJf-VfGo&e= > accomplished the feat. 2022 represents O’Sullivan’s 15th season at Florida, during which he owns a 604-288 (.677) record, passing the legendary Dave Fuller (556-354-6) for the most wins in program history on March 9, 2021. O’Sullivan’s .677 winning percentage ranks third among all active Division I head coaches, while Florida’s .616 clip in SEC play since 2008 stands as the top mark in the conference.

HOME SCORELESS STREAK
From Feb. 27 to March 12, the Florida pitching staff went 31 2/3 innings without allowing a run at Florida Ballpark. The Gators blanked Georgia State in the final seven innings of game three on Feb. 27, then pitched back-to-back shutouts vs. Florida A&M (17-0) on March 2 and Jacksonville (W, 1-0) on March 8, before finally surrendering a run at home in the seventh inning vs. Seton Hall on March 12.

DRAFT BUZZ
After being selected 40th overall in last year’s draft, J. Fabian is again projected as Florida’s top prospect by MLB Pipeline, coming in as the No. 45 overall prospect for the 2022 MLB Draft. Barco follows closely behind at No. 54, while Thompson (No. 90) and right-hander Brandon Sproat<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__floridagators.com_roster.aspx-3Frp-5Fid-3D15106&d=DwIGaQ&c=sJ6xIWYx-zLMB3EPkvcnVg&r=o5LKAX7slotfFMyE71jI7L22NYBIi1-KbRGNSXudTPo&m=WK6MVbUXK-HB48awsZnCQht-PHl0LeHqvoST1Q6oK6FEp88u_Nik9daDgh0-Wfr6&s=YILZGqE4oGH8ZA22VO-ZPSj7OGwUA3WDM1WkdL-JHwY&e= > (No. 98) fell just inside the top 100. TRAFFIC PATTERNS ON GAME DAY
Those visiting Florida Ballpark on game day should be aware of updated traffic patterns surrounding the ballpark. For those departing the ballpark via Hull Road, fans will be directed to turn right onto Hull Road from the parking lot and travel eastbound towards SW 23rd Drive.
