UF BSB: Gators and Bulldogs Battle in Fall SEC Showdown

Florida’s SEC exhibition matchup with Georgia featured a three-hit day by shortstop Josh Rivera and another perfect outing by left-handed pitcher by Hunter Barco.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Florida baseball faced off against SEC rival Georgia in a fall 10-inning affair at 121 Financial Ballpark on Friday night, with the Gators falling to the Bulldogs by a score of 8-5.

Shortstop Josh Rivera<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__floridagators.com_roster.aspx-3Frp-5Fid-3D14229&d=DwIF-g&c=sJ6xIWYx-zLMB3EPkvcnVg&r=o5LKAX7slotfFMyE71jI7L22NYBIi1-KbRGNSXudTPo&m=G3T2RmvgNytXUgwsVxlm4WHA3-P_G7o1GU4Vjf8ARj8&s=zoU9qmkylkUprveZG5CuHSNUBgd9uOSmwBEWzpX1iak&e= > shined at the plate for the Orange and Blue, finishing 3-for-5 with one run scored.

For the second time in as many starts this fall, left-handed pitcher Hunter Barco<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__floridagators.com_roster.aspx-3Frp-5Fid-3D14211&d=DwIF-g&c=sJ6xIWYx-zLMB3EPkvcnVg&r=o5LKAX7slotfFMyE71jI7L22NYBIi1-KbRGNSXudTPo&m=G3T2RmvgNytXUgwsVxlm4WHA3-P_G7o1GU4Vjf8ARj8&s=aT506DL0s-DZQA4aP_cylsjUZkgETAYvACwYS6W9Qzk&e= > opened the game in dominant fashion for the Gators. After retiring all-six batters he faced last Saturday against Georgia Southern, Barco tossed two more perfect innings for Florida against Georgia while striking out four batters.

Both teams traded scoreless frames in the first-two innings before the Bulldogs broke into the scoring column in the top of the third. Garrett Spikes brought in Chaney Rogers with an RBI single to center to open the scoring, while Corey Collins extended the lead to 5-0 with a grand slam to left field.

Freshman Pierce Coppola entered in the third and successfully worked the Gators out of the jam and proceeded to fire a scoreless fourth, finishing with 1.1 shutout innings and one strikeout.

Florida and Georgia each plated runs in the fifth. The Bulldogs opened the frame with one run in the top half, but the Gators responded with two runs of their own thanks to base hits from Kris Armstrong<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__floridagators.com_roster.aspx-3Frp-5Fid-3D14210&d=DwIF-g&c=sJ6xIWYx-zLMB3EPkvcnVg&r=o5LKAX7slotfFMyE71jI7L22NYBIi1-KbRGNSXudTPo&m=G3T2RmvgNytXUgwsVxlm4WHA3-P_G7o1GU4Vjf8ARj8&s=3xWV9dHPURH9zxGWL5plrgGFlqUTBUWGBTE1ol2SdmA&e= >, Colby Halter<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__floridagators.com_roster.aspx-3Frp-5Fid-3D14242&d=DwIF-g&c=sJ6xIWYx-zLMB3EPkvcnVg&r=o5LKAX7slotfFMyE71jI7L22NYBIi1-KbRGNSXudTPo&m=G3T2RmvgNytXUgwsVxlm4WHA3-P_G7o1GU4Vjf8ARj8&s=utLJOOjqhTgQah8IYzcG6Q3VUCp0xhYtdsRUDlPNLXk&e= > and Mac Guscette<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__floridagators.com_roster.aspx-3Frp-5Fid-3D14241&d=DwIF-g&c=sJ6xIWYx-zLMB3EPkvcnVg&r=o5LKAX7slotfFMyE71jI7L22NYBIi1-KbRGNSXudTPo&m=G3T2RmvgNytXUgwsVxlm4WHA3-P_G7o1GU4Vjf8ARj8&s=E5r2nKcsXUsf3S8NGXr-noTJyn3wn1Bf2tz9KQn8eJk&e= >. After Georgia got two runs back in the eighth inning, Florida responded for three runs in the ninth to bring the score to 8-5. Rivera plated the first run on a bases-loaded walk by Calilao, followed by an RBI single off the bat of BT Riopelle. The Gators capped off the inning with Jorge De Goti coming in to score on a fielder’s choice by Deric Fabian.

Karl Hartman and Philip Abner both turned in scoreless relief outings for Florida. Hartman pitched 1.1 innings while Abner produced a scoreless 10th inning, striking out three batters in the process.
