D1Baseball’s editors and national writers select the preseason All-America teams with one guiding principle in mind: to identify the best and most valuable college baseball players for the 2022 season. Past performance and future potential factor into the deliberations, but the objective is to select the players who would provide the most value for a team that wanted to win the College World Series in 2022 — the players who are best equipped to perform against elite college competition this spring.
With the newly-equipped second-team accolade in hand, Barco is coming off a 2021 campaign in which he was named to the Newcomer All-SEC Team and Southeast-ABCA/Rawlings All-Region Second Team. While pacing the Gators with 10 wins in a team-high 16 starts, Barco finished the year with a 4.01 ERA, .239 batting average against and 94 strikeouts in 83 innings pitched. The second-year performance came on the heels of a standout freshman season in which Barco went 2-0 with a 1.40 ERA and 26 strikeouts across 19.1 frames.
All told, Barco is the proud owner of a 12-3 career record and 3.52 ERA. The third-year left-hander boasts 120 strikeouts in 102.1 collegiate frames, with opposing batters hitting just .226 against him during his time in Orange & Blue.
Florida is set to open the 2022 season at home the weekend of Feb. 18-20 in the form of a three-game series against Liberty of the Atlantic Sun Conference.
