UAF WBB: Bulls Capture Nailbiter at UAB, 72-69

Birmingham, Ala. –  Feb. 3, 2024 – Freshman guard Vittoria Blasigh led all scorers with 21 points in South Florida women’s basketball’s (14-9, 6-4), 72-69, victory against UAB (16-6, 7-3) on Saturday at Bartow Arena in Birmingham, Ala. The victory marked USF’s third straight win in American Conference play.

Redshirt junior forward Romi Levy added 18 points, marking her 14 double-digit performance of the season. Sophomore wing Carla Brito (15 points) rounded out the Bull in double-figures. Senior forward Evelien Lutje Schipholt and Sophomore forward evenly split 18 points.

HOW THE GAME WAS DECIDED

A layup by the Blazer’s Denim Deshields put UAB in front, 69-68. Eighteen seconds later Lutje Schipholt made a field goal and the Bulls were back up, 70-69 with under a minute to play. Coming back after a South Florida timeout, Gonzalez was fouled by UAB’s Maddie Walsh. Gonzalez then connected on both makes at the line with 16 ticks to go, ultimately securing the Bulls victory.

NOTABLE NUMBERS

  • South Florida captured its 11th contest against UAB and the Bulls are winners of six straight in the all-time series.
  • USF holds a record of 2-1 in games decided by three points or less.
  • Second straight game that three Bulls finished in double-figure points.
  • Brito’s 15 points is the most she has scored in a game this season since 11 points against Baylor (Dec. 21) in the West Palm Classic.
  • Blasigh has collared 16 games in double-digit points and now has five 20-plus point performances on the season.

UP NEXT

South Florida Returns home to the Yuengling Center for its second regular-season meeting with Rice on Wednesday, Feb. 7. Tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m. and will stream live on ESPN+. The game has been selected as an American Showcase game by the conference and the broadcast features an all-women broadcast crew for National Girls and Women in Sports Day.

Additionally, the contest serves as South Florida’s annual Play4Kay game, with a Pink Rally Towel giveaway for students.

For the fourth consecutive year, The American’s Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships will be contested at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas. Both Championships expand to 14 teams this season with The Women’s Championship running March 9-13. Ticket packages for the Women’s Championship will be $85 per package. South Florida women’s basketball recorded its 11th 20-win season during the 2022-23 campaign. USF has made 18 postseason tournament appearances and had nine NCAA Tournament berths in head coach Jose Fernandez’s 23 seasons.
