BIRMINGHAM – UAB keeper Anika Toth was recently named to the FTF Female All-Canadian Freshmen First Team.
The Oakville, Ontario keeper finished her first season with the Blazers recording six victories, a pair of clean sheets and a goals against average of 1.02, which was fourth in Conference USA.
UABSports.com sat down with Toth to talk about the adjustment of coming to the states and starting as a freshman this past season.
How was the adjustment coming from Canada to the US?
The adjustment coming from Canada to the US was challenging at times. I have been fortunate enough to have spent a fair amount of time in the US before, both visiting family and going on vacation and this made the transition easier.
How different is the college game in the states than what you played in Canada?
The college game in the US is very different compared to what I played in Canada. I found the level of play to be faster and more physical which I adjusted to.
What was your experience as the starting keeper as a freshman?
It was an amazing opportunity to be able to play this past semester. The competition was great and I loved the challenge of stepping up for this experience.
What are your plans for training over the summer?
This summer, unfortunately, the league I was planning on playing in had its start date postponed due to COVID and I most likely won’t be able to participate. I will, however, be doing a lot of goalkeeper training with my coach here, along with regular conditioning and lifts.
What is your favorite place in Birmingham?
My favorite place in Birmingham is Railroad Park. It is a beautiful spot that we sometimes go to for team meals and meetings.
How excited are you for the fall season?
I am so excited for the fall season and cannot wait to get back to training on campus with my teammates and coaches. I feel confident going into the upcoming season with the development we had as a team last year.
