BIRMINGHAM – The UAB women’s soccer team earned all three Conference USA Weekly Awards presented by Surf & Turf Golf. Eve Beyer is Goalkeeper of the Week, Laura Zemberyova is Offensive Player of the Week and Asha Zuniga is Defensive Player of the Week, the conference announced today.
This marks the first time in program history that UAB has won all three weekly awards together.
After defeating North Texas 2-1 on Oct. 15, the Blazers went on the road and shutout Middle Tennessee 1-0 on Oct. 17.
Beyer held North Texas to half of its goals per game average and earned her sixth career clean sheet against Middle Tennessee. In the two matches, she made five saves. This is Beyer second GOTW award. Her first was on Oct. 14, 2019.
Against North Texas, Zemberyova set up both UAB goals. She assisted on Lexxe Lipsey equalizer in the 67th minute, then found Morgan Halliwill for the game winner in the 80th minute. Zemberyova netted the game-winner in the 63rd minute at Middle Tennessee. This marks her second OPOTW award this month, as she was previous honored on Oct. 5.
Zuniga played all 180 minutes and helped the defense hold the opposition to just six shots on target and one goal for the weekend. This is her first C-USA weekly award.
“We are very grateful for the recognition from our conference for our players,” said head coach Erica Demers. “This was a great weekend for our program and along with outstanding individual performances, our team grew and competed each game. Congratulations to Eve, Asha and Laura in being the first UAB players ever to swept these awards!”
Up next, the Blazers travel to Texas to take on UTSA (8-4-2, 3-2-1 C-USA) on Oct. 22. The Roadrunners are currently in second place in C-USA West with 10 points.
The final home match of the season will be Oct. 28 when UAB hosts UTEP. This will be Senior Night as the Class of 2021 will be honored prior to kickoff.
