UAB Women’s Soccer Opens Fall Season with 2-1 Victory at Mercer

MACON, Ga. – Freshman Kristen Goodroe’s goal in the 47th minute proved to the be the game-winner as the UAB Women’s Soccer team opened the Fall 2020 season with a 2-1 victory over Mercer on Saturday evening.

Reagan Kommor put UAB on the board in the 20th minute when she took a pass from Jessica Wheeler, dribbled through traffic, then blasted a shot past Mercer keeper Payton Jamieson from the left corner of the box.

Goodroe added the insurance goal two minutes into the 2nd half with assists from Morgan Halliwill, and Erika Manfre.

The Bears got on the board in the 64th minute when Ally Fordham chipped a ball over keeper Sarah Francis Adair two steps inside the box.

Mercer had a chance to make the contest level in the 88th minute, but Adair stopped Abigail Zoeller at point blank range. The Bears had a corner kick with 16 seconds remaining, but the ball sailed out of bounds as the Blazers ran out the clock.

Kommor led all players with five shots. Adair, who recorded the victory, made four saves. Anika Toth, who started in net, had a pair of saves.

“It was so great to be back on the field again competing with our team,” said head coach Erica Demers. “This was our first contest in 32 weeks and to play against a team that has had some game experience so far this Fall and leave with a win is an outstanding accomplishment for us.”

Up next, UAB will travel to Bowling Green, Ky. to take on Western Kentucky on Friday, Oct. 23. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
