UAB Women’s Soccer Opens Fall Season at Mercer on Saturday

BIRMINGHAM – It has been 350 days since the UAB Women’s Soccer team has played in a head-to-head competition. The Blazers officially open the Fall 2020 campaign tomorrow evening when they travel to Macon, Ga. to face Mercer (1-3-1). Kickoff is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. at Betts Stadium.

THE SERIES 
Saturday’s match will mark the fifth time the Blazers and Bears have faced each other. UAB holds a 2-1-1 advantage. The series began on 2001 in Macon, a 2-0 Blazers victory. After a five-year hiatus, they squads played a home-and-home series, with UAB winning 1-0 in Birmingham in 2006 and a 0-0 draw in Macon the following year. The teams did not meet again until 2015 when Mercer handed UAB a 5-1 defeat in Macon.

Saturday’s game will be streamed on ESPN+. A subscription is required to view the game.


ABOUT UAB 
The Blazers return 20 players – including 10 seniors – from last season. Among the returning players include All-Conference selections senior defender Audria Wood and goalkeeper Eve Beyer. Senior midfielder Regan Kommor is the team’s leading returning scorer (3g, 1a, 7p).

ABOUT MERCER 
The Bears have dropped their last two contests, including a 2-1 setback to Georgia State on Thursday night. Mercer’s leading scorer is sophomore forward Aliah Kitchens (2g, 1a, 5p). Senior keeper Jordyn Ebert has started all five matches and has a GAA of 1.68.

JUST PEACHY 
UAB has a 7-4-2 record against teams from the state of Georgia.

The Blazers travel to Bowling Green, Ky. to take on Western Kentucky on Friday, Oct. 23. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
