BIRMINGHAM – The UAB women’s soccer team will open the home slate of the 2021 spring season on Sunday afternoon against Mercer. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
ABOUT UAB
UAB is coming off a 3-0 loss at No. 22 Memphis on Thursday in the Blazers’ spring season opener. Overall, UAB is 1-2-0 which includes a 2-1 victory over Mercer on Oct. 17.
ABOUT MERCER
Mercer finished the 2020 fall season 1-4-1. This is the Bears’ first match of the spring season. Mercer tied Jacksonville 0-0 in an exhibition match on Jan. 30. The Bears return a pair of Preseason All-SoCon players in Nicole Icen and Ciara Whitely. Icen is the reigning Southern Conference Player of the Year and Whitely was a 2019 Second Team All-SoCon selection.
THE SERIES VS. MERCER
Sunday’s match will mark the sixth time the Blazers and Bears have faced each other. UAB holds a 3-1-1 advantage. The series began on 2001 in Macon, a 2-0 Blazers victory. After a five-year hiatus, they squads played a home-and-home series, with UAB winning 1-0 in Birmingham in 2006 and a 0-0 draw in Macon the following year. The teams met again in 2015 when Mercer handed UAB a 5-1 defeat in Macon. This past fall UAB defeated Mercer 2-1 in Macon.

UP NEXT
The Blazers remain at home to host North Alabama on Feb. 14. Kickoff is at 5 p.m. Note that the match versus ULM scheduled for Feb. 11 has been canceled.
