UAB Women’s Soccer Hosts Memphis

BIRMINGHAM – Coming off a 7-2 victory over Kennesaw State on Aug. 25, the UAB women’s soccer team remains at PNC Field to host Memphis on Sunday night. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

UAB LATELY

The Blazers are 2-0-1 on the season, with both victories coming at PNC Field. This marks the first time since 2017 that UAB is undefeated in its first three matches.

MEMPHIS LATELY   

The Tigers are 2-1-0 on the season. In its lone road match, Memphis fell to #18 Ole Miss 3-0.

THE SERIES VS. MEMPHIS

Memphis leads the all-time series 14-9-1. The teams first met in 1996 when the Tigers were a member of Conference USA. UM is 7-4-0 in games played in Birmingham and have won the last seven overall matchups.

LAST MATCH VS. MEMPHIS

Tanya Boychuk scored once and added an assist as No. 22 Memphis defeated UAB 3-0 on Feb. 2, 2021.

COMMON OPPONENTS
UAB and Memphis have one common opponent, Florida Atlantic.
 

TIP OF THE HAT

In UAB’s 7-2 victory over Kennesaw State, Stella Lawson scored a hat trick, marking the first time since Lexxe Lipsey did so on Feb. 14, 2021 vs. North Alabama. She is third in the NCAA in goals with four.

On August 17, Conference USA announced that Asha Zuniga has been named the Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.

AND THIS IS WHY…

On Aug. 22, Zuniga was named Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week. She scored the game-winning goal in UAB’s 1-0 season-opening victory over Chattanooga and anchored a defensive line that only allowed one goal in its two matches.

UAB TO THE AAC STARTING IN 2022-23

On Thurs., Oct. 21, American Athletic Conference officials announced that Charlotte, Florida Atlantic, North Texas, Rice and Texas San Antonio will join UAB as new members in the AAC and compete against current AAC members East Carolina, Memphis, Navy, USF, SMU, Temple, Tulane, Tulsa and Wichita State. The UAB women’s soccer team will begin AAC play in the 2023 season.

UP NEXT
The Blazers travel to the Copper State to face Arizona State on Sept. 1 and Arizona on Sept. 4. The next home match is Sept. 8 against Samford.
