UAB Women’s Soccer Hosts Georgia Southern to Open 2023 Season

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB Women’s Soccer team begins its first season as a member of the American Athletic Conference on Aug. 17 when it takes on Georgia Southern at PNC Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

UAB LATELY
The Blazers were picked to finish second in the AAC’s East Division. Carlyn PresleyJessica Wheeler and Asha Zuniga were all named to the AAC’s Watch List.

GEORGIA SOUTHERN LATELY

The Eagles were picked to finish fourth in the Sun Belt. Elis Nemstov and Sade Heinrichs were both named to the Preseason All-Sun Belt Team.

THE SERIES VS. GEORGIA SOUTHERN
The Blazers and Eagles have met three times, with UAB holding a 2-0-1 advantage.

LAST TIME AGAINST GEORGIA SOUTHERN
In its first road match of the season, UAB came from behind to draw with Georgia Southern 1-1 on August 21, 2022. The Blazers (1-0-1) got the equalizer in the 71st minute when Morgan Halliwill found a sliding Stella Lawson point blank for the goal.

COMMON OPPONENTS
UAB and Georgia Southern have one common opponent this season, South Alabama.

NEW YEAR, NEW COACHES

On January 18, 2023, Lisa Mann was named head coach of the Blazers. Mann arrives in the Magic City after spending the last four seasons as the head coach at West Virginia State University where she led the Yellow Jackets to a 40-15-4 record, a Mountain East Conference championship, and a berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament. Supporting her are Associate Head Coach Mark Hiller and Assistant Coach Chloe Kane. Hiller was head coach at Delta State where he had a record of 26-14-7 and Cain spent the last two years as a Graduate Assistant Coach at Smith College, Northampton, Mass.

BLAZERS PICKED 2ND IN THE EAST
UAB has been predicted to finish second in the ACC East Division in a poll conducted by the league’s head coaches. The Blazers received 40 points, including one first place vote. South Florida was chosen to finish atop the East Division with 61 points. Florida Atlantic was selected third (39) followed by East Carolina (35), Charlotte (29) and Temple (12).

Two-time defending conference champion Memphis was the unanimous 2023 preseason favorite with 61 points. SMU earned one first-place vote and 50 total points for second place. North Texas was selected third with 35 points, followed by Rice (30), UTSA (23) and Tulsa (17).
