UAB Women’s Soccer Falls to Samford 2-1

BIRMINGHAM – Samford got on the board in the 15th minute and added the game winner in the 29th minute in its 2-1 victory over UAB on Thursday night at Samford Soccer Complex.

Jessica Wheeler scored her first career goal in the 82nd minute for the Blazers, who fall to 1-2-0 on the season.

UAB’s goal started when Lexxe Lipsey fed Stella Kiss in the box. Kiss’ shot hit the crossbar and a clear attempt was made from a Samford defender. The ball found the right foot of Wheeler, who blasted a shot past Samford keeper Morgan McAslan.

Eve Beyer made four saves in net for UAB. Laura Zemberyova led all players with three shots. Wheeler, Kiss, Kendall PageMorgan Halliwill and Asha Zuniga added shots for the Blazers.

The home opener is Aug. 29 against Arizona State (3-0-0). The Sun Devils advanced to the second round of the College Cup last season and are coming off a 1-0 victory over Mississippi State earlier this evening.
This marks the first match between UAB and a PAC-12 school and the second time in three seasons that the Blazers have hosted a school from the Power 5.
