UAB Women’s Soccer Draws With Alabama State 0-0

BIRMINGHAM – UAB fired 39 shots at Alabama State keeper Sheila Sanchez but could not find the back of the net as the Blazers and Hornets finished Friday’s match in a 0-0 draw.

Sanchez turned away a career-high 20 shots.

The Blazers applied the offense from the get-go, with five shots in the first 19 minutes of play. Betsy Ornelas had the first scoring chance of the contest in the 30th minute when her shot missed inches high.

UAB kept the pressure on with five shots in the final four minutes of the 1st half.

The Blazers continued to dominate the field in the 2nd half, but luck was not their side. Stella Kiss hit the woodwork twice – in the 50th and 76th minutes. Lexxe Lipsey rang the ball off the post in the 88th minute. A minute later, a Blazer goal was called off due to offsides as the contest went to overtime.

UAB had appeared to win the match in the first minute of overtime, but once again the Blazers were flagged for offsides.

In the overtime periods, UAB added nine more shots to its tally.

Lipsey led all players with a career-high seven shots. Laura Zemberyova added six, Ava Martin and Ornelas each had five. In all, 13 different Blazers recorded shots.

The backline only allowed eight shots as keeper Anika Toth recorded her third career shutout.
