UAB Women’s Soccer Defeats UTEP 1-0, Wins Fifth Straight

EL PASO –Asha Zuniga’s goal in the 66th minute was all the scoring the UAB women’s soccer team needed in its 1-0 victory over UTEP on Thursday evening.

Eve Beyer recorded her third consecutive shutout, making three saves, as the Blazers remained perfect in Conference USA play at 4-0-0 and improved for 7-2-2 overall.

UAB’s goal happened when Jessica Wheeler chipped the ball to Zuniga, who placed a header past Miners’ keeper Mariah Scott.

“This was a hard-fought win for our team tonight. UTEP is always a challenging place to play and you have to earn every minute against them,” said head coach Erica Demers. “I thought we created some great opportunities in the run of play in the second half and we were a bit unlucky to not finish one of the chances. This is certainly a great start to conference play for the team and our staff.”

The Blazers will remain in Texas to take on North Texas on Oct. 2. The Mean Green (7-4-1, 4-3-1 C-USA) were off this evening. The next home match is against UTSA on Oct. 9 at noon.
