UAB Women’s Soccer and Mercer Draw 2-2

BIRMINGHAM –
Laura Zemberyova’s shot with nine seconds remaining in double overtime went wide left as the final buzzer sounded in UAB’s 2-2 draw with Mercer on Sunday afternoon at BBVA Field.

The Blazers (1-4-1) got on the board first when Jessica Wheeler fed Asha Zuniga for her first goal of the season in the 25th minute. UAB would hold the lead until the 55th minute when the Bears’ Cami Brown got the equalizer.

In the 59th minute, Lexxe Lipsey’s shot was saved but ricocheted to Stella Kiss, who buried the ball to put the Blazers up 2-1. UAB would stay ahead until the 89th minute when Mercer’s Payton Schurr tied the score.

In the extra frames, neither team could generate a quality scoring chance until Zemberyova’s previously mentioned attempt.

Zemberyova led all Blazers with four shots. Lipsey added three and Lizzie Hill two.

Eve Beyer made four stops in net for UAB.

The nonconference season closes out with a pair of in-state matches. On Sept. 10, UAB hosts Alabama State at 7 p.m.  The Hornets (1-5-0) are coming off a 1-0 loss at Garnder-Webb earlier today.

Two days later, on Sept. 12, the Blazers travel to Tuscaloosa to face Alabama. The Crimson Tide (3-3-0), who fell to Memphis 3-1 earlier tonight, face TCU on Sept. 9 before hosting the Blazers.
