UAB Women’s Basketball Signs Denim DeShields and Molly Moffitt

BIRMINGHAM – UAB women’s basketball head coach Randy Norton has announced the signings of Denim DeShields and Molly Moffitt to a National Letter of Intent.

DeShields, a 5-5 point guard from Brookhaven, Ga., played this past season at La Lumiere School in La Porte, Ind. She led the Lakers to a 19-5 record and averaged 15.2ppg, 5.3apg and 5.4rpg.

Prior to La Lumiere, DeShields competed at McEachern High School in Powder Springs, Ga. In 2020, she was named AJC First Team 7A All-State, GACA 7A South All-State and was AJC Honorable Mention 7A All-State during the 2019 season.

Nationally, she was the 20th-ranked point guard in the ESPN 2021 rankings, 23rd-ranked point guard in the nation according to College Girls Basketball Report and the second-ranked combo guard and was 13th-ranked overall player in Georgia according to Prep Girls Hoops.

Her elite athleticism and ability to make plays on both sides of the ball will make an immediate impact on our program. Denim will be a great ambassador for UAB. She will continue to help us to compete for Championships on the court and in the classroom.”


A 6-1 small forward from Mercer Island, Wash., Moffitt spent this season at Putnam Science Academy in Putnam, Conn. In her one season with the Mustangs, Moffitt led the team to a 15-8 record while averaging a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds per game.

Prior to Putman, Moffitt represented the Irish girls U-20 national team in the 2021 European Championship. In five games with Ireland, she averaged 9.2 points and 5.2 rebounds per game including a career-high 15 points against Israel.

During her senior high school season in 2021, Moffitt led Seattle Prep to a perfect 13-0 season and were Metro Champions. Due to Covid-19, there were no state playoff held. She was selected by SBLive as a Washington State Player of the Year Candidate and earned All-state, All-Conference and All-Region honors.

Her junior season, she earned First-Team All-Metro 3A, WIAA Second-Team, All-State 3A Girls and SBLive WA Top 11 “Glue” players in Washington State along with being Seattle Prep Co-MVP and Defensive Player of the Year. As a sophomore, she was Second-Team All-Metro 3A as well as team Co-MVP.

In AAU play, Moffit was a member of the Tree of Hope EYBL that finished fourth in nationals in 2019.

A Dean’s List member each semester at Seattle Prep, Moffitt plans on majoring in nursing.

The duo joins Ashton Elley and Desiree Ware who signed with UAB this past November and Amiya Payne who transferred in on April 13.
