UAB Women’s Basketball Hosts Rice Saturday Afternoon

BIRMINGHAM – UAB women’s basketball is set for a rematch with Rice Saturday afternoon in Bartow Arena.

The Blazers will face the Owls for the second time this season after falling to Rice 64-53 in Houston on Feb. 6.

UAB (17-9, 9-5 C-USA) avenged its loss to Middle Tennessee last Saturday with a win Thursday night in Murfreesboro. The Blazers look to do the same against Rice in another crucial C-USA game.

Three different Blazers recorded six rebounds as UAB beat Middle Tennessee on the glass, out-rebounding the Blue Racers 44-33. Rachael Childress led UAB with 16 points and six rebounds. Angela Vendrell recorded a season high 12 points with five rebounds. Sara Rosenfeldt scored a career high 10 points going 6-for-8 from the free throw line.

Rice (17-8, 12-2 C-USA) comes into the Saturday’s contest hiving lost two of their last three, at Old Dominion and Charlotte, before overcoming North Texas by three on Thursday.

The Owls are led in scoring and rebounding by Erica Ogwumike, who averages 18.8 points per game and 10.4 rebounds per contest. Junior Nancy Mulkey is the second of two Owls averaging double-figures in points with 11.2 points per game.

“Our six seniors only have two opportunities left in their basketball career to play in Bartow Arena,” said head coach Randy Norton. “I am hoping and encouraging our UAB faithful to come cheer them on this weekend.”

In the last meeting, the Blazers were held to 33.9 percent shooting from the field and 21.1 percent shooting from three. Rachael Childress was the only Blazer to score in double figures, with 10 points, but she was held without a three for the first time since Nov. 10. For the Owls, Ogwumike led the way with 25 points and nine rebounds, shooting 10-for-18 from the field.
