UAB Welcomes UTSA for Education Day

BIRMINGHAM – UAB women’s basketball looks to continue its conference win streak hosting UTSA at home for Education Day Thursday morning.

UAB (13-7, 5-3 C-USA) put together two quality road performances last week winning for just the sixth time in Hattiesburg last Thursday and shutting LA Tech down to six points in the fourth quarter on Saturday. 

Miyah Barnes has averaged a team best 4.7 boards in the last three games with back-to-back six rebound games. Barnes put up 16 points against FAU then followed with 20 points, six rebounds and one assist against Southern Miss. She added 13 more points and six rebounds against LA Tech averaging 16.3 points in her last three games.

Barnes, Rachael Childress, Trista Magee, Zakyia Weathersby and Imani Johnson each scored double figures against LA Tech. Weathersby recorded four blocks against the Lady Techsters while Angela Vendrell tallied five steals, dished out nine assists and grabbed a team high seven boards. 

UTSA (6-12, 2-5 C-USA) plays a young squad with three freshmen starting on the floor for the Roadrunners. Mikayla Woods has had a breakout rookie season leading the team with 15.7 points while averaging 5.6 rebounds recording 43 assists and 42 steals. Woods has been named C-USA Freshman of the Week three times this season. She was most recently awarded the honor on Jan. 27 after putting up 30 points on conference leader Rice with nine steals and six rebounds. Freshman Adryana Quezada is second on the team with 13.1 points and 5.7 rebounds per game and Charlene Mass is averaging 8.2 points with 21 steals on the season.

The Blazers and Roadrunners have met on six different occasions with UAB leading the series 4-2. The first meeting came in 2014 after UTSA joined C-USA, UAB claimed the first win 79-56 in Birmingham. The last meeting came in January of 2019 when UAB defeated UTSA 59-42 in San Antonio. Childress scored 21 points to carry the load for the Blazers in the win.
