UAB WBB Starts Florida Roadtrip with FIU on Thursday

BIRMINGHAM – After last week’s games against North Texas and Rice were postponed, the UAB women’s basketball team returns to the floor in Florida beginning Jan. 13 at FIU. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. (CT)/7 p.m. (ET). The Blazers will remain on the road to face Florida Atlantic on Jan. 15 at 1 p.m. (CT)/2 p.m. (ET).
 
UAB LATELY
UAB (8-5, 1-1 C-USA) is coming off a split in Texas. On Dec. 30, they defeated a heavily favored UTEP team 76-74 in overtime. On Jan. 1, the Blazers and UTSA went to overtime, but UAB came up short 68-60. The Blazers’ games on Jan. 6 and Jan. 8 against North Texas and Rice, respectively, were postponed.
 
FIU LATELY
FIU (8-4, 0-1 C-USA) lost to WKU on Jan. 8. The Panthers’ opening weekend games against Old Dominion (Dec.30) and Charlotte (Jan. 1) were postponed.
 
UAB AND FIU HISTORY     
The series began in 1981 in Coral Gables, Fla. which pitted the Blazers vs. the Sunblazers, FIU’s nickname until 1987. UAB won 110-38 – the 72 point margin of victory is still the largest in UAB program history. The teams played a pair of neutral site games in 1992, which was in the consolidation bracket of the NWIT and in 1994 along with a one-off in 2001 before the Panthers joined Conference USA in 2014. Overall, UAB leads the series 11-3, 8-2 in C-USA play.
 
LAST TIME AGAINST FIU
Rachael Childress led UAB with 19 points and Miyah Barnes added 17 as the Blazers defeated the Panthers 71-58 at Bartow Arena on Jan. 16, 2020.
 
COMMON OPPONENTS
UAB and FIU have 11 common opponents this season with Chicago State being the lone nonconference foe.

UAB is 71-40 against teams from Florida. 
 
TOP OF THE CHARTS         
Weathersby is third in the NCAA with 4.8 offensive rebounds per game. She ranks first in Conference USA in blocks (22), shooting percentage (57.6%) double-doubles (8), field goals made (83), rebounds (135) and rebounds per game (11.2). She’s second in the league in blocks per game (2.0).
 
GREAT 28     
Both Weathersby (Chicago State/Chattanooga) and Caitlynn Daniels (Mississippi Valley State) each have a 28-point game under their belts this year.
 
EIGHT IS ENOUGH  
In Daniels’ career day against MVSU, she drained eight 3-pointers. This is the most in C-USA this season and tied for the ninth most in the NCAA this season.
