UAB WBB Opens Conference USA Slate with UTEP on Thursday


BIRMINGHAM
 – Conference USA play begins on Dec. 30 when the UAB women’s basketball team travels to El Paso, Texas to take on UTEP. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. (CT)/7 p.m. (MT).

UAB LATELY
UAB (7-4) is coming off a 77-43 victory over Grambling State on Dec 21. Four Blazers scored in double-figures led by Emily Klaczek’s 16 points.

UTEP LATELY
UTEP (8-2) is coming off a 93-85 double overtime victory over Air Force on Dec. 21. Five Miners scored in double-figures led by Teal Battle’s 20-point performance.

UAB AND UTEP HISTORY 
The series began in 1990 with a UAB 61-41 victory. The series went on hiatus for 16 years, resuming in 2006. Overall, the Blazers lead the series 13-11 and 10-8 in Conference USA play. The teams have met five times in the C-USA Championship with the Miners holding a 3-2 edge. UTEP leads the series in El Paso 6-4.

LAST TIME AGAINST UTEP
Down two points with 15 seconds remaining, Margaret Whitley hit a 3-pointer and was fouled. She converted the free throw to put UAB ahead 60-58. On the ensuing possession, Michelle Pruitt tied the game to send the contest into overtime. UTEP scored the final six points in the extra period to take home a 68-64 victory on Feb. 6, 2021 in El Paso.

COMMON OPPONENTS
UAB and UTEP have 12 common opponents this season.

CONFERENCE USA OPENERS
Thursday’s game will mark UAB’s 26th season in Conference USA. The Blazers are 12-13 all-time in the league opener.

NUMBER 1   
Weathersby is third in the NCAA with 5.0 offensive rebounds per game. She ranks first in Conference USA in blocks (22), blocks per game (2.0), double-doubles (7), field goals made (77), rebounds (125) and rebounds per game (11.4).

GREAT 28     
Both Weathersby (Chicago State/Chattanooga) and Caitlynn Daniels (Mississippi Valley State) each have a 28-point game under their belts this year.

EIGHT IS ENOUGH  
In Daniels career day against MVSU, she drained eight 3-pointers. This is the most in C-USA this season and tied for the ninth most in the NCAA this season.

The Blazers remain in Texas and will travel to San Antonio to face UTSA Jan. 1. UAB returns home to host North Texas on Jan. 6 and Rice Jan. 8.
