UAB WBB Hosts WKU on Thursday Night

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB women’s basketball team plays the middle game of its homestand on Jan. 27 when it faces WKU at Bartow Arena. Tipoff time is scheduled for 6 p.m.

UAB LATELY
UAB (10-6, 3-2 C-USA) lost is first home game of the season to LA Tech on Jan. 22. Zakyia Weathersby recorded her 12th double-double of the season with 10 points while pulling down a game-high 17 rebounds. Emily Klaczek scored 15 points and Maria Roters added 12 points for the Blazers.

WKU LATELY
WKU (14-4, 7-0 C-USA) has won nine straight and 13 of its last 14 games. Meral Abdelgawad is the leading scorer in C-USA, averaging 20.1 points. She is second in the league shooting 53.8%, second only to Weathersby’s 56.6%.

UAB AND WKU HISTORY  
The series dates back to 1981 and has been played 25 times with WKU holding a 19-6 advantage over UAB. The teams met 12 times when they were members of the Sun Belt, with the Blazers only win coming in 1991. In Conference USA play, the Lady Toppers lead 6-2. WKU won the only matchup in the C-USA Championship in 2018.

LAST TIME AGAINST WKU
In a game that saw five ties and six lead changes, WKU got by UAB 69-65 on Jan. 9, 2020. Rachael Childress led all scorers with 15 points.

TOP OF THE CHARTS         
Weathersby is seventh in the NCAA 12 double-doubles, sixth with 4.4 offensive rebounds per game. She ranks first in Conference USA in blocks (31), blocks per game (1.9), shooting percentage (56.6%), rebounds (189) and rebounds per game (11.8). She’s second in the league in field goals made (103).

GREAT 28     
Both Weathersby (Chicago State/Chattanooga) and Caitlynn Daniels (Mississippi Valley State) each have a 28-point game under their belts this year.

EIGHT IS ENOUGH  
In Daniels career day against MVSU, she drained eight 3-pointers. This is the most in C-USA this season and tied for the 10th most in the NCAA this season.
