UAB WBB Falls to Samford 77-68

HOMEWOOD, Ala. – Andrea Cournoyer scored a game-high 27 points to lead Samford to a 77-68 victory over UAB on Sunday afternoon.

Zakyia Weathersby had 19 points and nine rebounds for the Blazers (5-3). Margaret Whitley added 16 points and Emily Klaczek chipped in 10.

UAB jumped out to an early 7-0 lead before the Bulldogs countered with a 9-0 run. Whitley’s 3-pointer ended the drought as the Blazers held the lead the rest of the quarter, going into the second frame ahead 21-17.

The Blazers kept the momentum going in the 2nd quarter, starting off on a 12-2 run to take a 14-point lead at 33-19 with 4:12 left. However, Samford answered with a 12-0 run before a pair of Lindsey Dullard foul shots send the game into halftime with UAB leading 35-31.

There were three lead changes in the 3rd quarter. The last coming with the Blazers up by five points, 47-42 at 5:04 mark. Samford went on a 10-0 run to regain the lead and never looked back.

The Bulldogs’ would see an advantage as high as 10 points in the 4th quarter. UAB would make it a two-possession game twice, but a three-point deficit at 3:14 grew to nine with 1:22 left. 

Samford made 54% of its shots to 38% for UAB. The Bulldogs scored 19 points off of Blazers turnovers and outscored UAB in the paint 40-24.

Up next, the Blazers return home on Dec. 15 to face Arkansas Pine Bluff. Tipoff is at 6 p.m.
