UAB WBB Falls to Old Dominion 81-75

BIRMINGHAM – Old Dominion’s Iggy Allen scored 15 of her game-high 29 points in the 3rd quarter as the Monarch’s defeated UAB 81-75 on Sunday afternoon.

Margaret Whitley led UAB (13-9, 6-5 C-USA) with 23 points. Zakyia Weathersby recorded a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds. Emily Klaczek added 13 points.

ODU improves to 19-5, 9-3 C-USA on the season.

UAB got off to a hot start, making eight of its first 10 baskets to take a 22-17 lead at the end of the 1st quarter. ODU would score the first five points of the 2nd quarter to tie the game before three straight Blazers’ layups made the score 28-22 with to 6:02 play. The Monarchs would tie the contest before Weathersby’s layup closed out the first half scoring with UAB leading 35-33.

The teams combined for 56 points in the 3rd quarter. Weathersby’s jumper put UAB ahead by six points with 8:34 remaining. ODU answered with a 12-2 run to make the score 47-43 at the midway point. A Lindsey Dullard and-1 started a 9-3 run capped by a Klaczek 3-pointer to put the Blazers ahead 54-50 with 2:09 left in the quarter. However, Allen would score 12 of the Monarchs’ next 14 points to give them a 64-60 heading into the final quarter.

The ODU lead got as high as 10 points at 79-69 with 3:42 left in the 4th quarter. The Blazers were able to cut the deficit in half with 1:24 left, but would not get any closer.

“At some point, we have to figure out a way to take care of the basketball,” said head coach Randy Norton.

The Blazers committed 20 turnovers that led to 24 Monarchs points.

“We got a really tough road ahead of us, but all games are capable of us winning.”

Up next, the Blazers return to Texas to face Rice on Feb. 17 and North Texas on Feb. 19. The next home contest is Feb. 21 against Rice in a contest rescheduled from Jan. 8.
