UAB WBB Completes Road Sweep After 82-65 Win Over Florida Atlantic

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Zakyia Weathersby recorded her 11th double-double of the season and three other Blazers had double-figure scoring in UAB’s 82-65 victory over Florida Atlantic on Saturday afternoon. The 82 points was a season-high for the Blazers who improve to 10-4, 3-1 C-USA.
 
Weathersby finished with 19 points on 9-of-10 shooting while pulling down a game-high 11 rebounds. Maria Roters scored a season-high 14 points, Destinee McGhee recorded a career-best 13 and Emily Klaczek added 12 for the Blazers
 
FAU’s Janeta Rozentale scored a game-high 21 points for the Owls, who fall to 5-10, 0-3 C-USA.
 
After four ties and three lead changes, the Blazers scored the final six points of the 1st quarter to take a 17-11 advantage after the first 10 minutes of play. UAB’s lead would get a high as nine points at 24-15 after Klaczek buried a 3-pointer at 7:53 of the 2nd quarter.
 
However, the Owls came back on an 14-2 run to take a 29-26 lead at the 3:35 mark. On the next possession, Weathersby converted an and-1 followed by a layup as the Blazers regained the lead 31-29 with 2:36 remaining. UAB would take a 33-31 advantage into halftime.
 
A Klaczek 3-pointer at 5:18 of the 3rd quarter made the score 47-35 and gave the Blazers their first double-digit lead of the game. Up 11 points with 7:43 remaining in the 4th quarter, FAU went on a 7-0 run over the next 59 seconds to make it a two-possession game at 62-56.
 
The UAB defense would step up and only allow two Owls field goals the remainder of the game, finishing the game outscoring FAU 18-9.
 
“What a great team win today,” said head coach Randy Norton. “As I told our team, we have so much balance and multiple players are stepping up to help us win.”
 
In addition to a season-high in points scored, the Blazers’ 33 field goals were also the most they have recorded this year. UAB finished shooting 55% from the field and was a perfect 10-10 from the foul line. They and outrebounded the Owls 41-29, while outscoring them in the paint 50-26.
 
“To be able to get two conference wins on the road is very challenging and we are extremely proud of the resilience of our team,” added Norton.
 
The Blazers return to Birmingham to face LA Tech on Jan. 22, WKU on Jan. 27 and Marshall on Jan. 29.
