UAB WBB Comes Up Short at San Diego State 55-51

SAN DIEGO – Zakyia Weathersby posted her fourth straight double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds, but it was San Diego State that came out on top 55-51 in an afternoon matchup at Viejas Arena on Monday.

Kylee Schneringer added 10 points and Maria Roters grabbed 10 rebounds for UAB (3-1).

Asia Avinger led all scorers with 13 for SDSU (4-1).

After trailing 30-25 at halftime, a pair of 3-pointers by Caitlynn Daniels sandwiched between two field goals and five free throws put UAB ahead 40-38 with 1:24 remaining in the 3rd quarter.

The Aztecs would regain the lead at the end of the quarter and remain ahead until Schneringer’s 3-pointer with 6:40 to play in the 4th quarter tied the game at 47-47.

SDSU would score the next six points to go up 53-47 with 3:41 to play. Each team would have two empty trips up the floor before a Roters layup made it a two-possession game with 2:02 remaining.  A pair of Margaret Whitley free throws made the score 53-51 with 58 seconds to play, but SDSU answered with a pair of foul shots at the 51 second mark, closing out the scoring 55-51.

UAB had chances to make it a one possession game, but missed its last three shots inside of 18 seconds.

“San Diego State has an excellent team with some veteran players,” said head coach Randy Norton. “I thought our team was very solid on defense and did a great job of following the game plan.”

The Blazers held a slight edge on the boards, 40-39 and forced 12 Aztec turnovers resulting in 11 points.

“Offensively we had 18 turnovers, shot 29% from the field and 27% from 3-point range. Our shot selection has to be better at times. I am very proud of our effort and I am confident our shots are going to fall,” added Norton.

The Blazers will wrap up their California trip with Pepperdine on Nov. 24. The next home contest is Nov. 29 against Chattanooga.
