BIRMINGHAM – The UAB women’s basketball team hits the road to Macon, Ga. when they face Mercer on Dec. 19. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. (CT)/2 p.m. (ET).
UAB LATELY
UAB (6-3) defeated Arkansas Pine Bluff 89-64 on Dec. 15. Five Blazers scored in double-figures led by Zakyia Weathersby’s 20 points and Destinee McGhee’s career-high 16. UAB’s 89 points was the most since they scored 87 at UTSA on Feb. 29, 2020. The Blazers are 1-3 on the road this season.
MERCER LATELY
Mercer (6-5) is coming off a 61-47 loss against UCF on Dec.12. The Bears are 3-2 at Hawkins Arena this season.
UAB AND MERCER HISTORY
The schools played each other six times between 1983 and 1987 with each team winning three times. The series went on hiatus until 1998 and again until last season. Overall, UAB has won four and Mercer has won four. The Bears leads the series in Macon 2-1.
LAST TIME AGAINST MERCER
Zakyia Weathersby’s layup with 29 seconds left send the game into overtime, but Mercer scored the final three points in the extra period in its 71-68 victory at Bartow Arena on Dec. 10, 2020.

UAB and Mercer have three common opponents this season: Chattanooga, Middle Tennessee and Samford.

Weathersby leads the NCAA with 5.5 offensive rebounds per game. She ranks first in Conference USA in blocks (19), blocks per game (2.4), double-doubles (6), field goals made (61), rebounds (95), rebounds per game (11.9) and points per game (18.1).

Both Weathersby (Chicago State/Chattanooga) and Caitlynn Daniels (Mississippi Valley State) each have a 28-point game under their belts this year.
EIGHT IS ENOUGH
In Daniels’ career day against MVSU, she drained eight 3-pointers. This is the most in C-USA this season and tied for the sixth most in the NCAA this season.
