BIRMINGHAM –The UAB men’s soccer team opens the 2021 season with a pair of matches in the Wolstein Classic. The Blazers will face Dayton on Aug. 27 at 3 p.m. and Ohio State on Aug. 29 at 4 p.m. All matches will be played at Jesse Owens Stadium in Columbus, Ohio.
THE SERIES VS. DAYTON
Friday’s match will be the fourth time the Blazers and Flyers have met. The teams faced each other in 1993 and 1994 as members of the Great Midwest Conference. UAB won both matches, played in Birmingham, 4-2 and 7-1, respectively. Dayton came to Birmingham once again in 2014 as part of the “Soccer for the Cure” event and played the Blazers to a 0-0 draw.
SCOUTING DAYTON
The Flyers were picked to finish third in the Atlantic 10. UD is the defending A-10 regular season champion and returns 10 starters from last year’s team, including reigning A-10 Midfielder of the Year Kingsford Adjei.
COMMON OPPONENTS
The teams have two common opponents this season – Memphis and Kentucky.

The Blazers have gone 11-16-2 against teams currently in the Atlantic 10 Conference. Dayton was in the Great Midwest Conference with UAB in 1993 and 1994. Saint Louis was also in the GMC from 1991 to 1994 and Conference USA from 1995 to 2004.

THE SERIES VS. OHIO STATE
Sunday’s match against the Buckeyes will be the first time the Blazers and Buckeyes have met.

The Buckeyes were picked to finish seventh in the Big Ten. OSU returns 2021 Big Ten Freshman of the Year Laurence Wootton to the lineup this season.
