UAB Men’s Soccer Hits the Road to Atlanta to Face Georgia State

BIRMINGHAM – Following a 3-2 loss to Georgia Southern on Saturday night the UAB men’s soccer team (1-1) heads back to the Peach State to take on Georgia State (2-0) on Wednesday evening at 4 p.m. CST in Atlanta.

UAB rallied late against Georgia Southern Saturday night with goals from Cale Loughrey and Grayson Dupont, but ultimately came up short against the Eagles. The Blazers have scored five goals in two matches so far this season, but also conceded five goals to their opponents. Four different Blazers have scored with Joseph Buete leading the way with two goals while Aodhán O’Hara, Loughrey and Dupont each tallied one.

Georgia State has looked sharp in its first two games defeating Mercer 2-1 and South Carolina 3-1 on the road to open the 2020 fall season. The Panthers have also seen four different players score with 2019 Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Year Aris Briggs leading the team with two. Goalkeeper Paul Tyson has recorded 13 saves so far on the season with an impressive .867 save percentage. Tyson was named one of the top 10 goalkeepers in the country by TopDrawerSoccer heading into the 2020 season.

“Georgia State is coming off of another very good year having missed out on the NCAA tournament by a penalty kick,” said head coach Jeff Kinney. “They’ve continued their form into this season starting 2-0 against very good opponents so we will have our work cut out for us. We are excited about the opportunity to bounce back from last weekend.”

The Panthers hold the overall series record against UAB with 13 wins, nine losses and one draw with the Blazers. Georgia State won the latest meeting between the two squads with a 4-2 victory in Atlanta last season. The most recent UAB win came in 2018 when the Blazers defeated the Panthers 4-0 in Birmingham.

Wednesday’s game, which was originally scheduled for 4 p.m. CST, has been pushed back to 5 p.m. CST due to weather in the Atlanta area. The game has also been moved from the GSU Soccer Field to Pete Petit Field at Georgia State Stadium. Continue to check UABSports.com for schedule updates and information on the 2020 fall season.
