UAB Men’s Soccer Defeats Ohio State 2-1 in Overtime

COLUMBUS – Brooks Rice scored in the first minute of overtime to lead UAB (1-1-0) to a 2-1 victory over Ohio State (1-1-0) in the final game of the Wolstein Classic in Columbus, Ohio.  

Guillermo Rodriguez added the helper on Rice’s second career game-winner.

The Buckeyes found the back of the net first on Luke Kiley’s goal in the 8th minute before Nathaniel St. Louis got the equalizer in the 17th minute off an assist from Curtis DeLeon.

Keeper Seth Torman made four saves to earn the victory.

St. Louis led the Blazers with a pair of shots. Rice, Rodriguez, Mason RobicheauxChristoffer VieAngell and Zak Mohamed all tallied shots for UAB.

“I’m extremely proud of the resolve that the group showed on the day,” said head coach Jeff Kinney. “Coming off Friday’s game where we just didn’t defend well in areas, we came out and defended extremely well and created some great chances. If we can defend like that every game, the results will follow.”

Up next for the Blazers is Soccer for the Cure. This two-day event takes place Sept. 3 and Sept. 5. UAB will host UTRGV on Friday at 7 p.m. and Central Arkansas Sunday at 5 p.m. Additionally, Elon and UCA will play Friday at 4 p.m. and UTRGV will face Elon on Sunday at 11:30 a.m.. The UAB women’s team plays Mercer on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.

NOTES

  • This is UAB’s first win over a Big Ten school since a 2-1 overtime victory against Indiana on Sept. 3, 2013
  • This was the first time the two squads have faced each other
