UAB Men’s Soccer Defeats Mercer, 1-0, in Spring Home Opener

BIRMINGHAM –The UAB men’s soccer team snapped a seven-game losing streak with a 1-0 win over Mercer on Sunday evening at BBVA Field.

“I thought we had a bad start out of the gate,” said head coach Jeff Kinney. “We were fortunate not to be down early in the match due to some crucial mistakes. “However, the boys deserve credit for fixing those issues and coming out and performing in the second half.  We were pleased with the result for sure, but we need to find a different level if we want to compete in our conference this year.”

The Blazers’ lone goal to win the game came when Brooks Rice found a trailing Mayno Linares. Linares would size up the Mercer defender in the box for a quick second before finding the back of the net off a right footed shot in the 80th minute.

UAB accumulated 12 shots with five on goal to the Bears eight shots with one on goal. Nine of the 12 shots came in the second half of the match.

The Blazers will be back at BBVA Field on March 6 to start conference play against Old Dominion at 2 pm.
